Default kickers

when do kickers matter? i just played a hand where both me and the other guy in hand had a pair of jacks. my kicker was a five, his was a three. the pot was split though. why didnt i win for having the better kicker? thanks!

kickers only matter when the lowest card of both players' hands is the same. you both had Jacks as highest card, so same hand made a split pot.
