Arrow Newbies tips and strategy guide!

Hi,

[Newbies] A little poker strategy guide! I've written a strategy guide there (for No Limit Texas Holdem). I hope it could help a bit understanding why poker is such a great game that got nothing to see with gambling

A summary : Playing only good hands, betting before the flop and Folding a lot is the way to win

Post any questions here (under a new thread or here if it's related to the strategy guide)! I'm sure good players from our poker room will reply to you really fast (even if the forum is only starting)

Just a suggestion from a novice eager to learn.

Since Iv'e started playing in tourneys, sit and go or regular, I have been using the normal NL tables to practice and try different things. I go on a 25/50 or 50/100 with 2K and expect to come away with nothing. I try out some of the tips etc posted in threads. It's not rocket science and yes the same tac tic will get different results depending on the other players on that table at the time.

The one thing and most important thing it has done for me is allow me to practice, learn and find out WHAT TYPE OF PLAYER I AM. I'm still crap LOL but doing this AND playing tourneys made me become more aware of my own style of play, then change my style of play, and has improved my overall results.

I do still sometimes go on a 'normal' table and just play around not sticking firmly to my rules, it's good fun and I reckon 95% of the time I get wiped out. That's OK though because that only confirms to me that in the long run it pays off being diciplined.

You need to develop your own set of rules that you play by that suit your game. This forum is an excellent place to get ideas for that. Once you find the basic rules that work for you you HAVE to be diciplined and stick to them.

This is very hard, because even though you've already proved to yourself that those rules have improved your game, you can still have a tendancy to slip back to the way you were playing before, i.e. calling every hand just to see the flop, going all in far too often, raising when you should be calling or calling when you should be folding, etc

If you can stick to your rules and see them work, when you go on a 'normal' table to try things out you should be in a better position to judge the results of your experimentation because you have something to compare it too. A baseline if you like.

In a tourney I now try to only play a certain range of hands most of the time. So for that aspect of the game I have my baseline. The next aspect for me to learn is when to bet and how much etc. Sounds simple but it aint. The hardest thing is making yourself stick to your rules.

Another aspect which is probably obvious to most, but wasn't to me is that different points of the game require a subtle change in your rules. For example, now in a tourney I am changing my game very slightly and have 3 phases of play.

Phase 1 - the start.
I play level 1 and sometimes level 2 with a very slightly wider range of hands I will call to see the flop.

Phase 2 - the middle, also the longest part of the game.
From level 3 I will reduce that range of hands back to what I call my 'normal' range.

Phase 3 - the end game.
If I have been lucky enough to get to the final table on a multi, or final 4 on a 10 seat, final 3 on a 6 seat. here my range of playable hands tightens further.

Now all of that is just about which hands I might play. In addition to that there's how should I bet, who else is playing, how good or bad have I been playing (and it will vary) etc etc.

So it seems to me the way to improve is to work on one aspect at a time untill you have 'your' baseline for that aspect. Then play that baseline and start the process all over again with another aspect of the game. Then play those two baselines and start on another aspect, etc etc etc.

Might not work for everyone, but seems to be helpful for me.

Now I'll say all of that another way............................................... .................................................. ....practice, practice, practice, practice.......!!!!!!!!!!!!

BlackLava's summary is 100% spot on if you ask me. But hey this is poker so remember one thing, it's one thing to talk about it but doing it is a lot harder.

Good luck to you, hope to see you on a tourney soon.

I would suggest that you start here: [Newbies] A little poker strategy guide!
It would seem that you are unfamiliar with the game, and there are very good hints, tips, and strategies throughout the newbies zone and strategic corner of the forums.

In brief, you are dealt two cards known as STARTERS or POCKETS, the next three cards come out together and are called the FLOP, next one card is the TURN, and the final card is the RIVER.
