Question on who wins the pot.

Im not sure sure if i was correct in noticing but myself and another player were left to see out a hand, and we both checked up until the the river card was dealt. My opponent bet and i called his bet and we both had the same the hand. However, he took the money from those who had posted beforehand from the pot whereas i only got the money i had put into the pot. Is the due to the fact that i didnt bet and only called? Why wasnt the pot shared? thx.

Are you sure you had exactly the same hand - down to the fifth card ?
