Default What is a "hole card"?

Just found the poker hand calculator at the bottom of the main page and when i try to use it, i select some cards, click calculate and it tells me i must choose some hole cards.
What does this mean please?
thanks

the hole cards are the ones that you get dealt in the beginning of the game. they are always facing down and you get 2 of them

thanks michaelvitelli
now you said that, i realise i wasn't using the calculator properly.
not sure how much that helps thought as you have to know what the other players cards are to get the odds. maybe i'll find it more useful as i go along.

I could never figure out how to make good use of it. Like you said, you need to know everybody's cards. Where do you get that kind of information from?
