Default when kickers count

Can anyone clarify kickers for me please.

If you an another player have the same winning hands, sometimes you share the pot but other times you win or lose depending on who has the higher kicker.

When does your kicker come into the equation?

in your hand K 7

they have K 5

on the table is K Q 9 8 3
it's the highest 5 cards. so if you both have two kings with the Q 9 8 so the pot is split as they are your 5 highest cards but if one of you had a card to beat the 8 say a J then you would hav two K with the Q J and 9. the best way to put it is that if you both have the same hand then your kicker must be in the top 5 highest cards.

Thanks Thorno,

I understand what you mean, I think!

Just one point in your example though. If one of you had the J then you would win OK, I get that. But if you both had 5 cards the same, are you saying the pot is split 50/50, and only those 5 cards count. Or would the highest of the remaining 2 cards each player has be used to determine the highest kicker.

I think I just answered my own question but I've typred it now so ay as well post it lol.

yes mate it would be 50/50 cos if you used the cards in your hand then you would be using more than 5 cards. so if your kickers are not one of the 5 highest cards you carn't bring them into play

kicker, also called a side card, is a card in a poker hand that does not itself take part in determining the rank of the hand, but that may be used to break ties between hands of the same rank. For example, the hand Q-Q-10-5-2 is ranked as a pair of queens. The 10, 5, and 2 are kickers
