Heh Chris, i'm exactly the same mate. I smoked from age 15-22yrs. Stopped for 15yrs and started again. I smoke 10-20/day. Well, more like 20/day. I also smoke weed but not with tobacco so i s'pose thats better. I'd love to give up again but i've got to be completely ready. It's no use trying until you feel 100% ready yourself. I'm not ready,i enjoy it too much. When i am i'll do it. As Kingcard said, just stop! Do ya turkey which is usually only the first few days then work on your will power and mind over matter stuff. Sounds bloody easy doesn't it lol, NOT.
When your are a clean non smoker give us some tips mate. In between times i'll stay a dirty happy, chain smoking, "skint" bird, lol,
Kerry.

Wish i had lol....I've tried myself four times this year...using various things, patches i found didn't work, tried progressively cutting back and then thought i wasn't getting anywhere, also went cold turkey which resulted in me in the corner of the room eye twitching.....

I quit cold turkey. No problems. The only thing I found was I had to WANT to quit. I had to wait until I felt I actually wanted to quit, not that I needed to. The first 3 days are the hardest. If you can get past thate urges are almost non existant anymore.

Some things that do help:

-Chew on gum. It keep ur mind busy.
-Everytime you feel like a smoke, have a glass of water instead. Or go around the block.

-Try not to be left doing nothing, if you can help it. If you find you have nothing to do, Go for a run. Do some housework. Just keep busy.

All this helps, but I found after the first 3 days I didnt feel like one anymore.. Good luck with quitting

hi i have a very good tip

i was smoking 27 years nearly 40 to 50 cigaretts a day.
beginning may i stopped.
it was very easy.
stay in hospital due to a heart attack.
so now i use some chewing gum or online poker to fill the time i used with smoking.
ists only a tip you dont have to do it this way.

Hey smokin is hard to get over start limiting them count them 10 a day no more, 1 pack every 2 days no more and little by little cut back.
I am trying that now!
beer and drinks make it harder, weed smokin may never go away its just the way it is.
good luc i'm tryin too!!!

When I quit it was actually chewing on toothpicks that did it for me. Seriously, most find that it is the oral fixation that most people cant overcome, not the nicotine addiction. (I still chew them to this day and my teeth have never been cleaner lol)

Just put a toothoick in the corner of your mouth and chew the end every now and them. That was my cold turkey and havent smoked in 5 or 6 years.

But the most inportant part like Matador said in an earlier post was WANT TO QUIT.

I quit cold turkey for 10 months. Then split with my girl, moved houses, and the kicker was my parents kept coming over to my new place and wouldn't leave. So I'm smoking again, past 2 months.

The trick I found to quitting was give yourself a head start by setting a date to vacation somewhere, giving you a new environment particularly away from any mates you are used to smoking with...I took mine for a week in Maine with my family, where there was also a guilt factor (my father and mother both quit chainsmoking when my father had triple bypass, mother a bit later).

Prepare to sleep a few days if it will help get the junk out of your system. After a few days it gets easier. But definitely quit cold turkey in my opinion, allowing yourself a few is the path to relapse. After a week, you will still get diminishing cravings, but you will feel better, so don't relapse.

Also, anticipate gaining 10-20 pounds, which I did, but I'm losing it again now I'm smoking. Not a good weight reduction technique though. And do keep your hands and mouth busy with whatever. Clean your home if you used to smoke there.

I plan to quit again soon after my family visits again this week.

I used to chain smoke terribly, especially when I was playing poker.Since quitting my game has improved a lot. Now I concentrate on everything that is going on. Also quit "Cold Turkey" The Matador is right, you have to "Want" to.

well, seeing as how almost everything i was going to say has been said in some way or another, i dont really have much to add other than personal stories. also, in a couple of days, i will be celebrating 2 years of non-cigarette life! and its been about 2.5 yrs of non-weed life! the greenthumb was easy for me to stop - had a panic attack and assumed everytime i smoke from then on would start a panic attack. i also had finished college 2 yrs back and was ready to stop smoking - even though i loved it so much. but the fear of my heart exploding keeps me from lighting up again!

now cigs is a different story, and if you add a bunch of what everybody said and take some parts away, you get my story. the way i did it worked so well im thinking of writing a book about it! so, i cant tell you too much because i dont want to be giving away my idea and then have some poker addict write the book quicker than me and get my royalties! but here is what worked for me:
first, have somewhat of a desire to quit. not so hardcore as people are saying (by using caps and what not, lol), but you do need to put it in your head that you have smoked for X amount of years and know that you need to stop...OR ELSE lol.
second, pick a "date" that is a good amount of time from now and say you are not going to be smoking by that time. that gives you 6-12 months to work on the problem. in that time you can do whatever you want - i went ape sh*t for a while, smoking a whole lot since i knew soon id never smoke again...later i realized that my body couldnt handle all that i so went back down to what i was before. soon after that i started cutting back - but not on the number of cigs, rather on the amount of the cig. this was key! sometimes when you need a cig, you just need a couple puffs...so take those few heavenly drags, and then toss it (not onto dry leaves or anything flammable). you might be spending more money short term, but if you succeed in quitting, then you wont be spending money in the long run.
third, do take some sort of vacation - for me it was going to grand canyon with my pops for a week. couldnt smoke - he would have smacked it out of my face, nor did i want to smoke, as we were hiking miles and miles a day.
when i got back from that trip (a week coldturkey without smoking and doing something to help keep my mind off smoking, and being with somebody who wouldnt let me smoke, and having gone through a quitting process, and having decided i wasnt going to be smoking by X date), i didnt return to smoking. my goal was january, and i quit in july. so i think my process was amazing.
now, i know what youre thinking, this guy is writing a ton! but never fear, i stop soon. this process worked for me - and my gf (who is now my fiance - hopefully not bc she is waiting to get half my profits from the book deal). her and i had tried countless times to quit, and this way, we both did - in one attempt. it works - its a process.

i do however, disagree with what others said, and this is where personal experience differs with everybody. for the last 2 years (almost) i have had this sick, perverted desire to smoke a cig. the first few weeks i dreamed about smoking and woke up in a cold sweat thinking i actually did. "you will get passed this" they say...well, for me, 2 years hasnt done the trick. every day, multiple times a day even, i want to smother my lips around that cancer stick. so, just know its hard - harder than heroin.

2 sayings on the subject - 1 helped me not want to smoke too much because of the graphic picture it painted in my sick head, the other is just great - i love the guy who said it:
1) "Smoking a cigarette is like sucking on the devil's dic*" anonymous
2) "Quitting smoking is the easiest thing to do, I do it at least 5 times a day!" Samuel Langhorne Clemens "Mark Twain"
