In all the casinos I've been to in the UK, the house only supplies free tea/coffee/coke/juice.

heading to the casino for the first time in my life (surprising I know). Thought I'd revisit this thread.

So my friend (the one who won a WSOP bracelet last summer in Vegas) asked me to drive him to the nearest casino because the WSOP circuit has already started up and he intends to get a better start on the player of the year than he did last year (esp. now that he has a much bigger bankroll).

In return he said he'd stake me in a $1/$2 table if I promise to check up on him from time to time. He says he doesn't care if I bust and he gets half the winnings if I'm up.

How awesome is this? Looking forward to it. Any more advice?

best of luck Duke. all i say is play ultra tight till you get a read on the table then strike with big hands ( i presume there $1/$2) rings

thing with rings tho players can come and go, best to fold a small pot and win a big 1

i have staked a player before, and he must have 100% trust in you to do it, i did

so dont even think about where the cash is from, play ur normal game, ur game is solid and should do well

ok, all have bad beats but dont play "scared money" follow ur instincts and you should do ok

This one may sound a bit crazy, but have a good rest before you go
and then maybe a shower to wake yourself up.
You need to be on top of your game, and you can't be when you're tired.
As Kev said, try not to worry too much about losing his money. You won't
have the aggression you need if you do.
Good luck Duke, keep the faith in your game.

Good advice.

I just remembered something else.
You probably already know this, but it might be worth a reminder in case you forget :-
When the flops being dealt, watch the other players, not the cards.
Two reasons - you might get some valuable tells, and it helps to stop you giving away any yourself.
The cards will still be there after they've been dealt, so no need to watch them coming down.
Good luck again

Duke,

I don't know the level of friendship between you and ur friend. But one thing to note. You don't want him to blame you for some loss... so don't advise him... just general words of encouragement. And let him know if u think he's tired.

So yesterday was quite fun. I'll give a little sum up like Sandy did in a separate thread.

My friend comes to my apartment at 9:45ish (casino is an hour and a half away, and cards hit the air in his tourney at 11). So we were rushed a little, but not too bad. It's a 3 day tourney, so being 20 minutes late isn't the end of the world. I dropped him off when we got there, and he handed me $400 and said, "buy in for $200, and talk to me before you use the other $200" and walked inside while I parked.

Got there and went just outside the tourney room to wait for my friend to have a break and make sure everything was settled before finding a table myself. While I was there Scotty Nguyen walked by, and I didn't even know what to say. So I go put my name on the list for $1/$2 NLHE and get called pretty soon as they are starting a new table.

I sit with a couple older men to my right and one to my left, so I can have position on most of them, seeing as they bet when they have it and I can get away from it or steal easier (even though I only bluffed once that day and it was the guy that had position on me). Across the table was a guy in with an eye patch who was quite scary. And then also there was a guy who I'd seen before (maybe on TV?? ) who definitely knew what he was doing (but somehow it worked out that we were the ones tangling most).

I saw AA busted 4 times (thrice from the same woman) and people spewing chips and rebuying like crazy. My 2nd hand I folded 43 in SB, and there was a 4 on every street. Would have been quads if I'd just completed the SB (and it was a big pot too) I just sat there bet my 99 and my QQ or my AK, saw a couple cheap pots in position and took advantage of when I would actually hit. Got a walk early with 72 and hit trips on the flop. I got 3 streets of action (I think call call bet since I was out of position).

After a few hours I needed a lunch break and came back to a different table later. Got a nice pot from a lady that couldn't fold her hands. Had QQ and K came on the flop but also J and 10 for an up and down. So I bet 3 streets. I could easily rep AK or AQ for a good flop hand, a turn bet was kind of a semi bet kind of a value bet and kind of a blocking bet, and I ended up rivering the nuts anyway. I think she just had a pair of K and I bet a little too high to get paid off, but it was still a nice pot that got my heart racing. I actually got AA for once and had 4 callers to a flop (one of them the obvious "expert" at the table that had position on me). My half pot flop bet took it down though, so I actually won with AA .

Anyway, after an hour and a half the day ended for the tourney, we packed up and drove back. My friend was about 25% above chip average and half the field had already busted out. He was a little better than 100th in stack size and 110 make the money. He went back for day 2 today and is at scotty nguyen's table right now and is doing well so far. As for me I turned $200 into $377. So not bad for being nervous and feeling like a fish out of water. Just tried to play as well as I could to what kind of table I was at. Obviously didn't play my best game, but it was good enough game. And $177 for 5ish hours of play ain't too bad. Looking forward to trying it again.

Going to Harrah's in New Orlean's Mardi Gras weekend. Hopefully I'll have an equally good or even better story then.

My friend just busted JJ into AQ pretty short stacked. Not right on the bubble but pretty close. He outlasted severl pros though, so a pretty good run (plus he kept half of what I won, so that's like 1/16th of his buy in back lol)

@earp,, 100 % agreed!! DO NOT get banged up and expect to come back home with any $$$. and i dont suggest having your friends play on a black jack table if they dont know the rules. (double down, splits, when to hit if the dealer is showing a K or a 2..ect..) have them stick to the slots and wheel games if they have them. either way dont go with the money you cant afford to lose.. GOOD LUCK!

So I have an actual casino question:

there were some games they mentioned that I had no idea about. I kept hearing them over the intercom while I was playing. I googled some, like the "must move" game, and found out what it meant. There was one though that I couldn't find an answer to.

Does anyone know what "congress" means in regard to poker? Maybe I misunderstood what they were saying but it sounded like they often said, "John D, you're table's now ready at 5/10 Omaha congress" or something to that extent. Any knowledge on this subject?
