OK here is my input....I was a chef, now I cook for the love of others and food.

I have posted easy to make elegant recipes here in the past, so maybe a group for that would be nice.

----JOKE----(or maybe not so much)

What's the difference between a chef and a cook?

A chef gets up at 4 a.m.
Leaves his 500K house with coffee in hand (that he had to make)
Says hello to his motorcycle
Says hello to his speed boat
Says hello to his motor home
Says hello to his sports car
Gets in his pick up truck and goes to work

At midnight he returns home after cooking, prepping, managing, ordering, checking inventory, setting the menu and starting the roasted foods for the next days menu.

Says good night to his motorcycle
Says good night to his speed boat
Says good night to his motor home
Says good night to his sports car

Goes to bed exhausted for three hours of pain ridden sleep while he heals from the day

Repeat 7 days a week

A cook works eight hours for a jerk with a bad attitude, gets his check and goes out partying and drinking. On weekends he bar-b-ques for his friend while drinking cold beer and having fun.

Any wonder that there are more cooks than chefs?

it`s not as clear cut as that, i know 40 or so chefs, and most of the ones who opened there own resturants went bust in 6 months, the only one i know who is still doing well is working along with his wife. and the reason they are making money is because they both work 60/70 hours a week each, saving on wage bills, i`ve been a head chef for 11 years, and i`d rather take my sallery, than risk my assets on a resturant...i take home about £350 a week ($700 u.s.) which isn`t great, but it is enough for me...

A qusestion for you all especially in the uk as I don't know about other countries but do you think that TV programes such as Masterchefe Restaraunt and all others of this ilk give the wrong impression of the Catering Trade, starting from the way they dress for cooking etc, fight thru to the end result. Thanks for reading, from a saved writer. lol

yeah bloody right they do i have met ainsley harriet and on ready steady cook they dont just have seconds to think up what to make out of the bag the chefs confer with each other and ainsley for around 10 minutes

they also dont show how many hours of prep and how many hours a day a chef has to work
espesially over christmas with all the office parties and family get togethers

dont even get me started on christmas day itself when its every other persons special day but the poor catering staff (i even include waiting staff in this one )

too all players out there who like to go to a restraunt ocasionaly have a wee thought for the kitchen staff please think of these points

if the restraunt closes at 10pm do you think it is ok to arrive at 9.50 and expect everybody to be overjoyed to serve you

by all means complain if something is wrong but ive had so many dishes put back for silly things like there are to many potatoes on the plate the gravy isnt thick enough its not like i make at home from granules

if there is 60-100 people in the restaraunt do you really think you should get your starter in 5 mins

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ok sorry thats my little rant over with
