The Emerald Isle. a poem

My name is Fred, I will be giving you one of my many pieces of doggerel during the next few months, I hope they don't bore you all to tears, here goes.
The Emerald Isle
Ireland the country of rivers and loughs,
You could wrap it and take it back home in a box.
I delighted in Porter and angling as well,
The people I met held me under their spell.

In the eighties and nineties I oft took a trip,
Cross the Straits of St George on a slow moving ship.
From Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire with rods in the car,
To Sligo or Leitrim, or old Castlebar.

On my earliest trips I'd be forced to admit,
On the edge of my seat in the pubs I would sit,
The troubles were still a big problem for all,
And you never knew when discrimination would call.

At this point I have to tell all who would ask,
Not once on my visits was I taken to task,
We English, old enemies over the years,
Still sample the Porter, raise a glass, and say cheers.

nice poem but in Ireland we say slainte for a toast
but i suppose that there is poetic licence so good effort m8
