| Here's one for Telboy... Elvis Presley was a 20th century icon. But how many of us today, really know much about his life and times? I think it will be interesting if people take it in turns to post one interesting fact about him. That way, we can create a whole picture of the man himself, and his many great works, for us all to enjoy and learn from. Your fact can be anything, from his favourite food to the name of his first pet. They don't need to follow date order. I'll start with :- Elvis Aaron Presleya - Born in Tupelo, Mississippi January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977 was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. A cultural icon, he is widely known by the single name Elvis. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". ![]()

| None of Elvis’s feature films or music documentaries were ever nominated for an Oscar in any category. He made 31 movies and two music documentaries.

| sorry this is a copy and paste, but if we start at the begining,im not sure how many know this fact. On January 8, 1935 Gladys Presley gave birth to two twins. Jesse Garon, and Elvis Aron in a shotgun shack in Tupelo Mississippi. Jesse Garon was stillborn and announced dead at birth. Elvis Aron lived, and was happy and healthy. Eye witness’s state in Elaine Dundy’s book “Elvis & Gladys” that Jesse was placed in a box on a table while Gladys gave birth to Elvis. Neighbors who came by to pay their respects, are unable to describe the deceased infant. It is unknown if Jesse and Elvis were identical twins or not. He was then prepared for burial in the cemetery and laid to rest. There is a historical discrepancy in print regarding his grave site. It is listed in many books that there is ‘no’ marker, and other books state there is a marker which is ‘un-marked’ Elvis suffered greatly throughout his life being a twin-less twin. The condition is heartbreaking and more or less, untreatable. Twins have a bond inside the womb that is irreplaceable when one twin dies, thus adding difficulty to the childhood of the surviving twin. This is likely to have contributed to a number or Elvis’s personality traits, strengths, weaknesses etc. Jesse Garon’s remains were never moved to Memphis. To this day, he is still buried in an unmarked grave in Tupelo. A headstone in his honor sits at Graceland. The memorial headstone is not placed next to his father, mother, brother, and grandmother.

| Interesting stuff Tel, thanks. Not only was Elvis a direct descendant of Abraham Lincoln’s great-great grandfather, Isaiah Harrison, he was a distant cousin of Jimmy Carter.

| Love Me Tender was Elvis Presley’s first motion picture. It was a typical Western that takes place just after the completion of the Civil War. It’s plot sets up a love triangle involving two brothers. Elvis' character Clint Reno marries his older brother's sweetheart when the elder sibling fails to return from the war, but brother Vince unexpectedly shows up and naturally is not happy about the state of affairs on the family farm. The rivalry brings about tragic consequences. In Love Me Tender, Elvis’s character dies. After the preview audiences reacted so badly to his character's fate, the film’s producers feared that this would cause a negative reaction on the films full release so re-wrote the ending showing a ghostly image of Elvis singing Love me Tender as the rest of the cast walk off into the Sunset. | In 1973, Elvis gave Muhammad Ali a $10,000 white robe, with the words “People’s Champion” emblazoned across the back. Ali was touched, and wore the robe on 31 March, when he fought Ken Norton for the first time. Norton broke Ali’s jaw in the second round, before winning a 12-round decision. Ali vowed never to wear the robe again, although he maintained his friendship with Elvis.

| was elvis ever in the UK???? copied this from news archive Elvis's secret UK visit revealed Tommy Steele and Elvis Presley Steele has kept Elvis' London visit from his fans for over 50 years Veteran rock star Tommy Steele has admitted he took Elvis Presley on a secret tour of London in 1958. For more than 50 years, Presley fans have believed the only time he ever set foot in the UK was during a stop-over at Prestwick Airport in March 1960. But theatre producer Bill Kenwright revealed Steele's secret on Radio 2. In a note passed to the Daily Mail, Steele said he "swore never to divulge publicly" what took place and he "regrets" that news leaked out. The 71-year-old, who is currently appearing in a production of Dr Dolittle in Woking, said: "I can only hope he [Presley] can forgive me. "It was an event shared by two young men sharing the same love of their music and the same thrill of achieving something unimaginable." Speaking to Radio 2 presenter Ken Bruce, Kenwright revealed Presley struck up a friendship with Steele after ringing him up. When the rock legend flew into London for a day, Steele apparently took him round the city, showing him famous landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament.

| In September 1941, Presley entered first grade at East Tupelo Consolidated, where his instructors regarded him as "average". He was encouraged to enter a singing contest after impressing his schoolteacher with a rendition of Red Foley's country song "Old Shep" during morning prayers. The contest, held at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show on October 3, 1945, saw his first public performance: dressed as a cowboy, the ten-year-old Presley stood on a chair to reach the microphone and sang "Old Shep". He recalled placing fifth.

| Further to Tel's comments re Love Me Tender : Film was originally 'scheduled' to be titled The Reno Brothers but changed to take advantage of his popularity. Several of the experienced leads were impressed with Elvis' acting and dedication -- supposedly he knew the script for every part. Such a shame that he was not allowed to blossom in this medium which he loved.

| Each of the three Presley singles released in the first half of 1957 went to number one: "Too Much", "All Shook Up", and "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear". Already an international star, he was attracting fans even where his music was not officially released. Under the headline "Presley Records a Craze in Soviet" e New York Times reported that pressings of his music on discarded X-ray plates were commanding high prices in Leningrad

| on this day in 1973. Aloha from Hawaii is a music concert that was headlined by Elvis Presley, and was broadcast live via satellite on January 14, 1973. It is the most watched broadcast by an individual entertainer in television history, viewed by an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide. The concert took place at the Honolulu International Center (HIC) in Honolulu (now known as the Neal S. Blaisdell Center) and aired in over 40 countries across Asia and Europe (who received the telecast the next day, also in primetime). Despite the satellite innovation, the United States did not air the concert until April 4, 1973 (the concert took place the same day as Super Bowl VII). The show was the most expensive entertainment special at the time, costing $2.5 million.
