Default OP66 General Knowledge Quiz Thread.

Here is the OP66 do it ourselves quiz thread, ONLY for those who enjoy a good interesting General Knowledge quiz.
When you give the answer to the previous question, post one for the following person.

It's more fun for you if you can give your answer without using google, although if you have to then that's OK too as long as it's accurate.

The next question should have some kind of link to the previous answer.
For example -

Q....In which year was Shirley Temple born ? A....1928

Next Q...Who was the Australian Prime Minister in 1928?

and so on.....

( PS. Is it possible for a mod to delete any post in this particular thread which they might consider to be off - topic,
personal to another member, inflammatory or derogatory? Let's keep this one healthy please, if possible)

First question :-

In which science fiction classic does the submarine ' Nautilus' appear?

Sorry....I had to google this in the end...great question.

The pound symbol is an ornate L, from the Latin libra - a pound (weight). This was because a pound (money) was originally a pound (weight) of silver. The penny symbol was 'd' for denarius, a Roman silver coin. Two hundred and forty of the silver pennies above would weigh a pound.
I think the 's' just stands for the word 'shilling. ( can anyone put me right on that? )

Q. What number does the Roman numeral CDXLVIII stand for?

When I was a kid and studied latin for a few years I learnt it as Libra Soldat, denarii. The soldat was supposed to be a stipend for buying salt. I have since heard that this is incorrect and the S was for salarium which is a salt related term -- a stipend for the soldier (soldat) to buy salt. Hence our word salary!!

I am unsure which is the exact answer and possibly historians have different views. If I remember tomorrow I will check Google but now it's off to bed.

Good thread Phatt.

Yep, now you mention it Blues, I seem to remember reading that the Roman soldiers got paid in salt, or were given a salt ration, salt being one of our most valuable mineral resources.
The word soldat seems to make more sense, but it could be either.

Anyone want to put the next question? Maybe using salt as the link?

I think Candle in the Wind was FIRST released as a single in 1974, ASBO, go with your question though.

released in the UK as a single in 1976.

Which Elton John song was nearly kept from release because of a certain flatulate sound?

Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was also John's first No. 1 single in the UK, topping the chart for six weeks in mid 1976. He would not enjoy a solo British chart-topper until "Sacrifice" in 1990. It also became his sixth No. 1 single in the US, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. In the U.S. it was certified Gold on 8/17/1976 by the R.I.A.A.
