Talking P.C. gone awry: 'winterval' part 2...

just came across this news story last nite. This is NOT a joke.

made me think of BigSmudge and his 'winterval' story...

Wilmington, N.C. — "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" caused a stir at a New Hanover County school. A parent complained about the song's religious reference and got it pulled from her child's kindergarten Christmas show at Murrayville Elementary School.
The song was pulled “because it had the word Christmas in it,” said Rick Holliday, assistant school superintendent.
A Jewish mother, who didn't want her name published, objected to what she called "religious overtones" in the song. So the principal agreed to pull it from the program.
School administrators said they were then flooded with complaints from other angry parents.
“I would say it's not a very religious song. It's about Santa Claus,” parent Anne Vanslyke said.
School board members, administrators and attorneys listened closely to the song's lyrics and decided the song was secular.
“Rudolph is a secular song. It was about a flying reindeer, not a religious symbol,” Holliday said.
Many parents shouted out with glee when they heard the song was back in the program.
“I think it's great that they let the kids sing because all the kids love that song,” Vanslyke said.
Any student who objects to singing a Christmas song or attending a program can decline participation and will not be penalized, according to school administrators.
“We do try to be cognizant of everyone's feelings,” Holliday said.
School administrations also decided that for future concerts, religious songs can be included, as long as other faiths are represented as well.

apparently now, even the reindeer are considered religious symbols lol.

I did a bit of further looking into this story, turns out that the core issue is the grand american principle of separation of church and state. The mother in question was upset because, even tho the childrens participation in the holiday program was optional, the choir teacher was using mandatory class time to rehearse the songs, and her poor little baby was 'forcibly exposed' the 'christian' concepts and images of santa clause and rudolf.

In South Florida, one community decorated the entrance with a nativity set, menorah, and I believe Happy Kwanza and people still complained. They had to take everything down. I tried to find the article but couldn't.

I found the article. I was wrong.
My memory is not that clear these days. LOL
Sorry about the wrong information.
Here is the article:
Town leaders put up six Stars of David and a giant menorah in 2001 after some Jewish residents requested them. Two years later, Snowdon requested Christian decorations, but was turned down.
She made the same request this year and sued on Dec. 2 after the city denied her request to include four nativity scene banners.
A resident must be allowed to display Christian decorations alongside a public Jewish holiday display, a federal judge has ruled.

Found this article as well...The world is truly going nutty as Stepoff stated. You won't believe the last part. WOW!!!

Nativity Scenes vandalized nationwide
Today, the Catholic League erected a nativity scene in Central Park. Unfortunately, vandals have destroyed or stolen manger scenes nationwide. Here are some of the locales:

· Foreman, Arizona
· Rogers, Arizona
· Antioch, California
· Glastonbury, Connecticut
· Arredondo Farms, Florida (three instances)
· Bal Harbour, Florida
· Fort Walton Beach, Florida
· Panama City, Florida (more than a dozen incidences)
· Tampa, Florida
· Bainbridge, Georgia
· Schaumberg, Illinois (two instances)
· Kearney, Missouri (two instances)
· Kirkwood, Missouri
· Bozeman, Montana
· Lattimore, North Carolina
· Westbury, New York (the homeowner was assaulted) I live near here!
· Elyria, Ohio
· Sylvania Township, Ohio
· Greensboro, North Carolina
· Leesburg, Virginia
· Marlow, West Virginia

In perhaps the sickest incident, an elementary public school coach in Marietta, Georgia drove students around the area in his pickup truck instructing them to thrash Christmas displays after dark; they also created obscene displays with some of the adorning statues.

Am I the only one that thinks the line "Many parents shouted out with glee.." is hilarious???

My best friend in Primary school missed out on the last term of school every year just in case she heard Christmas stories because they're jehovah witness'. I remember the beginning of the school year, everyone would be in total shock and disbelief that she didn't get any presents, and she'd be hounded for weeks about it.
