Red face putting things in perspective

This is so sad!!!! shows what we value!

Ed McMahon died this week. He was a great entertainer, but prior to his stage accomplishments he was a distinguished Marine Corps fighter pilot in WWII earning six Air Medals and attaining the rank of Colonel. He was discharged in 1946 and was later promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the CA Air National Guard.

Farrah Fawcett died this week after a long career in Hollywood as an actress. After she was diagnosed with cancer, she became an activist for cancer treatment and devoted her last remaining years encouraging people to seek treatment She documented her plight on film and used it to encourage others to stay positive and upbeat despite their diagnosis and suffering.

Michael Jackson died this week. He was perhaps one of the greatest singers of modern time. He will also be remembered for his eccentric lifestyle that included sleeping with a chimpanzee, living in a carnival-like atmosphere at Neverland, his fascination with Peter Pan, and his numerous masks and costumes. He also admitted to finding pleasure sleeping with young boys and paying out millions of dollars in settlements to the families of these boys despite being acquitted by a court on one allegation of sexual molestation.

QUESTION - Which of the above did the House of Representatives declare a moment of silence for today? (Hint - It wasn't the first two.)

QUESTION - Which of the above's family received a personal note of condolence from President Obama? (Hint - It wasn't the first two.) Need we say more??

Very nice post. Unfortunately (at least for us citizens) it shows how out of touch our media and representatives are with the country today. And it shows THEIR values.

Excellent post smudge. I am from US. We voted these people into office - what were we thinking? I am so ashamed of the congress of the US on several levels.

Well said smudge and hands....

Welcome to America. Can't quite understand why people are dying to get in here. Oh yeah, because our government's priorities are all f^^^ed up and we take better care of everyone else but our own people...unless your f^^king rich. Then we'll just spend money we don't have to make sure you keep your 5 Jaquars, 6 Mercedes, and summer house in St.Thomas.

(nope, I'm not bitter)

Besides our government, the media is our biggest problem. And being the queen of conspiracy theories, I believe they work hand in hand.

The whole big thing about MJ's funeral and passing is to distract us temporarily from what the government is doing. And any evidence that will show just exactly how corrupt our government really is will be hidden forever from us because they know it will start a civil war...which is what we need to give our country back to our people. Rich people won't allow that!

The little piece on Michael Jackson seems to forget what he did for charities and what humanitarianism work he did. You don't have to like him and I too don't agree with the amount of media attention his death has received but to make him out to be some sick b***ard isn't right. Yes, it isn't right again for him to have a moment of silence and a personal message from Obama but I don't understand why you have failed to note what Jacko did for charities.
And it's quite understanding coming from a media perspective as to why there has been so much attention on Jacko. I don't think either Farah Fawcett or Ed McMahon would have had one billion people watching their funerals services and I doubt the familes of those two people would have really wanted it either. The bottom line about the attention towards Jacko's death is that it was so shocking and the media are milking it for all it's worth to get as much money out of it as possible.

Another very good point. Yes, he did do a lot for charities. 39 of them I believe.

Also, my guess is that you are correct in assuming that neither Ed's nor Farrah's families would have wanted all the publicity. Neither of their deaths was a shock as was MJ's.

I by no means am bashing him, and the publicity he is getting is very similar to his late father-in-law. Both were idolized by millions, and had a tremendous impact on music as well as their fans.

My only issue has really nothing to do with him specifically, just how the media reacts to different issues. MJ's funeral seems to be more important than my friends losing their house and them not being able to qualify for any help from our government because they bring in a whopping total of 25k a year. Was more until the husband lost his job and had to go to work for Wal-Mart at half his old salary.

Yes, I can relate to that completely. And I completely agree with your statement. There are other more important things going on right now that MJ's death but those things don't make as good of stories and they don't make as much money so it's quite understandable as to why the media have done what they've done. They're doing their jobs, it may not be moral but the Jackson family don't seem to have a problem with it, shown by them allowing the service to be viewed across the globe. Although, no doubt they would of had their own service too, they still allowed it to happen.

My first post wasn't pointed towards you. I agree with you. It was directed to Bigsmudge's original post which conviniently misses out the good things which MJ did in his life. It's convinient because it's apparent over recent days that Smudge has a dislike for MJ.

Another point about how, apparantly, the MJ funeral didn't represent what the people thought and what the people wanted. I think it did. As I said before, one billion people watched it.

.
totally wrong m8 I had no like or dislike of the "bloke " and to be honest it makes no difference to me whether he lived or died,
The post was an e mail which i received and decided to publish , on the contrary all you seem to want to see is the charity works you keep bringing up , Now without going over old ground here , you are entitled to your view , as I am mine re payments made to families ,you either believe one side or the other, just because he could sing & dance & did charity work doesnt make any difference,Was Fred West a good builder ? was Ian Huntly agood caretaker ? Freddie Mercury was a great entertainer ,but do the people he infected think he was a great MAN ? as the title says , lets put things into perspective ,
