Whats in a name ?

Ok ,as I understand it ,when the next changeover comes , some of us may not be able to use our op 66 names , now maybe if there are too many letters ,that might be understandable , but what if YOUR name cant be used cos its already taken ? i for one would have to think very seriously about continuing on this site ,

honest m8 im gutted 2 be honest racked of because ive got 13 letters in my name had it nearly 15 months 2 me it not good so very bitter but will be nice 2 hear what others think

well...as fickle as it may sound...i wouldnt play under another name...our names have become part of this place, and if i have to play as sally2578_6302, then i just wont play call me a spoilt brat, thats just my thoughts...maybe if i had nicotine i would have a different view tho but i dont think its fair that we have to change, some of us had to do it last time, having to do it again is just bang on

well i'm 1 that has to change my name, and kinda sad about it.

but putting it into the bigger picture,looking at all the benefits the new network will bring it only a small sacrifice.

its not as if it my real name i have to change is it....

so,so be it.if its got to be done, its got to be done,at least this way we gain so much more than were ever going to loose.

I think if it was possible to spend more time deleting defunct or unused accounts, or users using more than one account then the number of letters in the name wouldnt really matter, the server could still cope.

So checked on other thread,apparently my "name" is available...but that does'nt mean it's reserved.That's what Kev said on the thread.So when we move,if you don't register right away and someone takes your name,i guess you're sh1t out of luck?

what i can't understand is why some have to

i'm sure with all the technology it would be possible to keep name's as they are

and that we should be able to move without having to register new/again

i think there is/must be a backdoor for everything and a solution for this

please dont leave over this, just keep in mind, we are moving on to better things, with so many added extras on this new site, which ppl have been shouting for, for ages, its only a small sacrifice some ppl will have to make by changing their names.(or part of their name).....

i do understand some will feel disappointed, but if it has to be, it has to be....

I know exactly how that feels, through some personal issues i changed my name from 1ou1ou, and i still have to tell folk who i am before they recognise me....cept Sally of course lol

Actually it is not a matter of the server coping, as I have been told, it is a security protocol on the new system.

As you can see, I also have had to change my name because I was over on letters.

I agree with TheBountyHunter, names are a way of recognizing each other BUT we get avatars back and the new system looks like a HUGE improvement, so be it.

On a positive note, if a name change is needed maybe create your avatar with old name until people remember who you are and of course we can use player notes to remind us as well

That's fair enough Texan, although I still don't really see how limiting the number of characters in a players name makes it any more secure than already it is.

And yes, both Kev and Ausangel make good points about the return of our avatars, many of the old script players will be recognisable by their avatars, presuming they use the same ones that is, I know I will be getting brian back up on his cross.

I guess I'm lucky in that my player name can just drop a couple of letters and still be immediately recognisable as me, although some of the possible variations don't look quite right, one of them at least looks so much like it it will be difficult for people to notice it's even changed.

The possibility that someone else has already taken it is very slim, but still a possibility. As You pointed out Tex, you've already changed your player name and presumably it's already registered with the upcoming script, is it not possible that the OP66 players who already know they have to change their names can also do this ahead of the new script going live, giving us a bit of a heads up over the non OP66 players that will also be using the new network. It would be much appreciated if you could make enquiries with bosslava to find out.

Anyone who leaves because they have to amend their name surely has other issues and is using this as an excuse. Maybe it is the build up of a few things but not the primary reason.
Then there will be those that threaten to leave so they can read all the nice comments about themselves and being asked to stay.

I think the idea of the name check thread is to prepare for this and make the change over as clean and easy as possible. I changed mine in advance to test what links might break from the name change (poker room, forum, chat and outlaws). I opted to leave it changed.

I will check to see if there will be an easy way to do the name changes as we progress since this is currently a one-a-a-time manual process.
