It's from Carmina Burana by Carl Orf.
The piece is called "O Fortuna".

Not realy a classical fan but do like some of it but don't like opera.

This is one of my all time fav pieces and to me probly one of the most emotive pieces of music i have ever heard, seems to set me str8 if i'm feeling a bit low, i listen to this and forget about my worries for a short time.

YouTube - Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings op. 11

You are right on that one, don't think i've ever seen the film all the way through in one shot but i know it's on the sound track.

Here's it with a vid someone has made with clips from the film.

I am a music buff. Always have difficulties to relate to the "what's your fav" type of qestions, since I love some many things but...

... There is something extremely deep for me in Shostakovich's String quartet No 8 in C minor, op. 110.

I am usually very picky with interpretations and love the 1979 recording by the Borodin string quartet.

There are loads and loads of others.

If you can follow German, I really love the Weill / Brecht orignal version of the Dreigröschenoper (my fav is the 1958 recording with Lotte Lenya).

Never could get used to Weill sung in English...

I could go on for the night, so will leave it at that.

Cool thread.

cuddycat the 1812 is defenitly on the list

thankyou swiss for posting those pieces i have to admit that i dont know them but i promise i will hunt them down and have a listen
im more of a casual listener to classical music and often listen to it to relax or just for a change from pop and rock
i bow to your depth of knowledge and i dont pretend to be anything else but a listener the the popular classics but i will take your advice and relax with a malt whiskey and listen to those pieces

Well, I simply have the recordings.

I wouldn't listen to the Shostakovich piece online, for it is all in nuances and chances are it will be loosing too much.

For Weill / Lenya, I digged that and there seem to be lots of goodies.

Be aware that the original is a full (and hilarious) story which won't be apparent from separate numbers.

Have fun (and good single malts)

Though you do not get visuals, I think it is a most excellent version (only about a fifth of the story, though):

and finally a bit of info on this bone-trancing piece of Shostakovich's I mentioned:

String Quartet No. 8 (Shostakovich) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Though extremely sad, I do not find it depressing on tad: rather cathartic, cleansing.

I grew up listening to Mario Lanza, I love his rich voice.
This is 1 of my fav by him YouTube - Mario Lanza - E Lucevan le Stelle from Tosca
Although this 1 is not opera it really reminds me of listening to music with my late father as a child, its a beautiful song. YouTube - Mario Lanza GUARDIAN ANGELS Harpo Marx

As for classical to many to pick.

Great that you enjoy, m8. Would love to heare how you get on.

English translation should be easy to find, as it has been recasted in the US after Weill's exile (as many of his earlier work), under the name "Three Penny Opera"

My CD (one disk, nice box and libretto, On CBS cersion referred above) has a great multilingual booklet and some good general background, in case.
