Default What are the odds of a decent tournament?

Following the now peacefully resolved misunderstanding with Rich that you can follow below if you are into these kind of things , I wish to clarifiy for new readers that this is not a ranting / bitching / call for attention thread but my genuine interrogations of the moment.

There are a few clear (I hope) questions at the end and what precedes is background information for those

Hiya folks,

After another pause of a few weeks, I tried another tournament this afternoon.

And without being totally catastrophic, it was still quite random, as usual.

And, honestly, I don't have patience anymore for that.

Fundamentally: I subscribe to the "Joe Cooled" pov that over tournaments, things should balance.

With two minor disagreements: due to the volume and randomness play (and the fact I play little), not sure if it really will (Joe; imagine each hand you raise pre flop substantially already much more than in RL has 5 or 6 callers, I would need to be convinced by a statistical model that it would work on the long run).

But on that, I don't really care.

The other one is more important: I get terribly bored and loose all interest in the game, so I play stupid and get out quickly.

MY average per tourny used to be decent in the toplist, now I must be around 1.5 lol so much I don't care when this happens. In the beginning, I used to stick and try to rebuild, but honestly I prefer to go play money on a good site, especially since I find that when I play a bit too often here my general skills become a tad looser if I am not ultra vigilant when multi-tabling.

Now, every now and then, you find a sensible game almost all the way through and then, suddendly, it is a lot of fun again: I love to compete for points, final table seat and medals and I love lots of people here.

So my question(s) are:

- Is there one of the 4 regulars that is usually a bit tighter than the others? Agressive or passive I don't care as long as it makes some poker sense

(I can play all, timewise, sepending on periods). I know mammoth is best, but I son't have the time to build up chips nowadays and am at 7M or so so, so bankroll too low to participate (should be 20M and up, if one emulates real playconditions)

- What are the odds, according to you, to play a good, satisfying tournament where you encounter actual poker on the tables consistently throughout?

Say count minimum half an hour of play (if you get booted out rapidly, which happens. Less than that you can't really tell)

In my experience of these last few months, I would say 1/15 approx.

Very unattractive odds as far as I am concerned.

I'd be sad to quit altogether playing, so what I do now is I start a tourny and quit it / hara kiri it if I find it random, but it is frustrating, and I guess for all. Especially today, I found myself unpleasant in the chatbox (just explaining what I felt frankly, but it is not the best of vibes), while there where plenty of good folks at the table and the game was bad but not the worse I have seen, by quite far: just average lousy op66.

It is just that I don't have any more margin of coping, I guess.

And as much as I love the orignals and expect to have fun there with the group, competing for medals, points, and final table seat, give a real poker objective/incentive which is a bit more abstract, less inviting in friendly group tournaments.

I think I just needed to clarify this for myself by writing it.

Honestly I have no clue what my participation here will be in the future.

Good riddance anyway, in case ;-)

I'd be curious to read other's take on my "odds" question, though, coz it sort of help anticipating.

A bit like when you have a low-pair preflop and know your odds of hitting trips if you can buy your way cheap enough to see the flop... you can follow series and do not get wrong expectations.

@Mr. Rich Schizopulp whatever version of it reads it

Not necessarily leaving. I play on other sites and RL anyway, but love this special place too (the intersting and constructive people that make it, not you of course).

I just needed to make a bilan and since I have been playing here for a long time I felt like sharing my reflections, an exercise that many have unfolded on the fora over time and never myself in some detail.

I always found them interesting to read and if you don't you can just also shut up.

My real question is about odds to find a consistent torunament according to different players.

Helps to tune expectations.

Sad you closed you mind to politeness, respect and likely intelligence. Hope you might open it up one day.

hi m8 dont know if i can answer so many question but i will try.
odds of finding a good satisfying tourny 1/10 think this starts off with your first table if you know most of the players and ignore the all inners you get of to a good start and can play some poker i find i can enjoy the game no matter where i finish.
think the crown is one of the best of the four to play but thats the one i play most.
i understand your frustrations and started to question my game and it was recommended to me to play the six seater sng double up games i know they are cash games but the poker is great with three getting paid and three losers there is little risk of bad play hope you get the chance to try them.
will finish with i know you have not been well and hope this is not clouding your view of op66 consider you to be a good friend and would not like to lose you from site cheer up and good luck on tables m8

Thaks for the wishes tel, it is just another spine stroke, happens form time to time (too much extreme sports in the past) and I am used to it.

It doesn't affect in any way my view of Op66: what I mention is a recurring problem which simply affects me more and more, I use to ignore and just try to keep playing and I simply can't anyomre nowadays, so addressing the "problem"

I won't leave OP66 fully, I would have a year ago otherwise. Too many great friends here. You of course being one.

I am just trying to find ways to play games I can be interested in and as long as play is sensible, like you I have fun even if I get out quickly, which of course happens. Thaks for the SnG suggestion. 6 seater is a format I like to play a lot (with 2 paid places usually), so I'll check it out... but it will never be the same than the medal run...

Looking forward to the London 'party', m8. I will make the thread soon (need to recovert ans finalize my plans), as soon as the tickets are botuhgt and all dates clarified. I'll pm you, sal and betty first.

my mind swiss, is not at all closed, i'm just sick of all the negativity of late, you find this site 'lousy' you prefer to play on a 'good' site' and you have said ' good riddance' while not exactly clarifying yourself at all! and in my mind is not respectful or polite to the great team that have created and continue to run op66.
i apologise if my immediate response insulted you, and as a man of so called intellect i am sure you would prefer to continue this discussion in private?

kindest regards

Rich

Sure Rich. I just need to answer to your clarification publicly then we can keep on via pm, if you wish (I don't really need to but won't have a problem at all if you wish)

I am not one to keep grudges also, but I am biting when I find people lack respect, which I indfeed found while reading your first answer.

Anyone knowing me here will attest that I am a respectful and fair-play member of this community, though I can be aggressive as a player and, ahem, peculiar in my humour.

And I don't see what disrespect to this site or the team of which most moderators are friends (and in which I have invested also "community" efforts in setting up stuff, for a long time) to write a detailed, polite account of how I feel and explain to myself things.

And ask an odd-odds question to which you saw for example tel, one of the most respected players here, understood and answered with results not that far than mine.

If taking the time to do so amounts to negativity, I see a problem. I think I used my right to free-speech here without insulting anyone or negativizing (English = foreign language for me... sorry) .

I regard slamming disregarding comments because you are yourself "sick" actually bringing more negative vibes than else. One can just also ignore such threads or respect people who wish to debate when posting.

Now that you post with a degree of politeness, I can tune with pleasure and send you my genuine cordial regards and wish you good luck on the tables.

Holy hades!

Who's peeing on who's Cheerio's??? Is there a full moon???

Stern... no need to run away... I'd simply make a post that puts odds on how many *hours* (we don't deal in days or weeks, pal) until you return... "they all return", like Arnold Schwarzenegger...

Don't worry, m8 we are buddies now. We chose that over mutual annihilation.

And I never said I would leave, if you read my o.p fully.

I just have difficulties to find motivations to play my until now favorite events: the tournaments.

So I was trying an "odd" approach: start x, and drop them rapidly when I find them tedious and stick whenever I "hit" a consistently interesting game to partake in.

Can i just ask 2 questions......What constitutes a "decent game" in your eyes?
Also what is good consistent poker?

About the odds, i dont really know the answer on that 1 but
surely it would have a link with your answers to the above.

Players going all-in constantly is obviously not good play nor is
it the making of a good game, but if you are playing a MTT you will
surely come across a few different styles of play. Is this not consistent poker?

As for a good/decent game, to me that could be doing well and finishing in a paid place
but i've also had good games due to other players were
i havent done well at all. I could be sitting consistently folding
bad cards "hoping" for a great hand that never materialises, but due
to the great banter or watching a couple of players battle it out i
could also be enjoying a decent game.

In a nutshell, any game can be good one, if you let it.
Obviously we'd all like to win but if your too serious about it maybe
effect your opinion on the game/tourny.

Anyway, hope that atleast made sense, cause i know it wont be helpful

In all honesty, today's OZ Wombats was excellent play.

Congrat to skiiii, who won... and he is supposed to be a beginner.

He played superbly.

I want to add that me doing good has nothing to do my appreciation. I took risks and I had to be booted out in the bubble no problem: great game, still.

Further cool, since Mr. Cool, whom I highly regard, told me he was goint to suggest it as the tightest in his eye. So I'll try to be up more often at 8am (local time). This time I hadn't slept. lolol.

So I'll start my tourny log for odds over time, I'll keep updating.

Feel free to do the same with your experiences, since I play little compared to most (and we all have different feelings as regarding what makes a good, solid, enjoyable game).

I started this thread coz of a terribly lousy one.

So, so far:

Good poker = 1

Lousy boring = 1

Current answer to my o.p. questions is : the odds are 50% so far.

Tonight BC. Good game. Finished around 40th / 72.

So, so far:

Good poker = 2

Lousy boring = 1

Current answer to my o.p. questions is : Stern's odds are 2/3 so far.
