Default What would you have done?

Short stacked in a deep stack tourney. In 2nd to last place at the time. Already had to go all in pre flop 3 times before due to being at/around 10 BB left.

Could or should I have played it any differently? Couldn't see any point in just calling. What do you think?

Hi Stevo,
I would say the fact you initially just flat called tells you it was not an all in hand. For me, at that stage and in your position it was a pre flop fold, still plenty of time for better hands to come along.

Enjoyed meeting you too tel. Thanks for your view, which I always value.

I see what your saying capt, but as unlikely as it was I was hoping to see a cheap flop. Not getting that chance I felt it had to be all or nothing. With hindsight I guess the big raise AND a call should have told me to bin it. A heads up situation would have improved my odds in theory.

As a side note I've rarely followed the 10 BB theory (which strictly speaking I didn't follow with this hand as my all in was post raise), and as a result I've often gradually dwindled away to nothing so many times in the past. It does seem to be the case that once you get below 10 BB your all in often isn't threatening enough to stop calls and steal the blinds. Out of the 3 times I did follow it in this game I got called once and doubled up, and everyone folded the other 2 times. So I might follow that theory a bit more in the future.

I agree with the captain. Also when it came down to it, the board was just a suck resuck basically. You got lucky to catch the K and he got lucky to get running clubs for the flush. As far as the 10bb goes, like everything in poker it depends on the situation. I would definitely defend the 10bb shove strategy and the whole M zone theory (read stern's post or google M zone). However, I seem to constantly see a few women on this site who play a very cautious loose passive game (for lack of a better description) who come to the final table with least chips and never shove or win anything back but just squeak by as others lose and end up getting 2nd place or sometimes first if they can knock out number 3 and out heads up the other player. I mean it's like Teebs thread going on now about the best style of play. It's what you make work for you (and what your opponents are like). If you are up against aggressive ones, a limp is bad in that spot. If you have call stations you could wait for a stronger hand and shove. Or if they are average to tight players (or just smart in general) a shove there is best. All in all hard to discuss "best plays" when you're talking about such a small effective stack anyway.

And when it comes down to it the whole debate here is a moot point because however you played it, you were getting called by AJ from a player like that. Seriously doubt he's going to put you on AQ AK or high pocket pair. Either way good luck in the future.

differnt style or play ,to me haveing your own outlook is the ticket.
i have never (and don't plant) read a book on poker or ever stick to a plan of i must do ....x,y,z
i like seeing the flop for cheep too,, i'da called too, then A woulda had me on alert,,but more so that 2 clubs hit,,,one mre i got flush worries and when the 4th club hitsone A on board im a 10 , ,,,J,Q now has me scared.ida had to fold at 4th club aon table to probably any bet ,,maybe id call one bet.(800)
i don't like pre-flop all in with any 2 down cards,, i want to see the table.i slow play my A,A's and K,K,, and i switch it up when im with players that know me a little,,
i try to never be predicable unless i want to seem that way.
i got 1st in a $1.00,,no re-but one add on last night ,(up till 5:00 am , long one,, the heavy better was good ,,just too prdictable,, i waited,, and waited and trapped him after he was hit hard by other player,,every time he was 2 face cards he bet big pre-flop,,he was easy to see what he was up to ,,he made it to 3rd of 36,,not bad wit a method of play i thought was junk most of the game,,he rivered a bi too,,but patiance paid off ...again.

now go play OUTLAWS
