| Most books on this subject are a joke. What you really need is a book that teaches you how to lie. I have read most poker books that are out there including alot of the old ones on 5 card stud and draw. There is one book that you do need and that is 'The Rules of Poker'. Several versions are out there, I recommend the Game Day Poker Almanac. The only books that have ever actually been of any help to me are Harrington on Hold'em vol. I & II Mike Caro's Book of Tells and my favorite, Tournament Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky. If you are at the beginner level I recommend The Poker Players Bible by Lou Krieger. Books to avoid are anything written by Phil Hellmuth and Doyle Brunson. While both great poker players, their skills at writng leave something to be desired. The 'Super System' is neither super nor a system. Books are great for giving you a small understanding of the game and a 'heads up' as far as creating your own stategy(no pun intended) but the best way to learn is to do. Stop reading this and go play... see you there.

| The books actually teach you a lot if you are playing real money and dont want to lose your shirt. For instance it is very rare you see anyone go all in on a real money table unless they are in position and have the nuts. Most bets are 4 x BB maximum and the games are a lot slower and a lot more strategic thats where the books come in handy. I had no idea what position was until I started reading a little bit but I think the key is to take ideas from all the players and not just copy someone who wrote a book

| Take information from everywhere; whether it be books or other players. Find out what works best for you in what situation. Be patient and fold JJ, lol.

| By all means I am not trying to discourage anyone from reading anything. Just don't expect any miracles to happen because you read a book. It is important to have a good foundation in the numbers and in strategy but what it really comes down to is your gut instinct. Also please note that I am talking about real poker here not sitting in front of a screen clicking a mouse. The bottom line is write your own book.
