How long should he be allowed to fail

How long should the old pals act be allowed to go on with Alistair Cook in his role as opening batsman for England. He has obvious technical problems with his head falling away to the off side, he is still moving into position when the ball arrives and he keeps failing. Can England afford to wait until the last minute to make a decision on an opening bat when the Ashes party is finally chosen. It just isn't fair on a replacement if he is picked at the last minute. I cannot see how he can repair technical problems as serious as his are, get a fresh bat in for the next test against Pakistan.
