Unfortunately the average IQ of a football supporter means that they will behave with ignorance which is why Owen was booed. Unfortunately this trait is not confined to any particular group of "supporters" (liverpool in this case). I was saddened on Monday to hear a section of the Fuham crown booing Jimmy Bullard when he came on as a substitute for Hull on monday at Craven Cottage.

It seems to be the norm these days and supporters in general have short memories. Personally I don't like it, but I guess in Michael Owens case he could also take it as a kind of compliment.

Hey I was mighty impressed with "Richard Dunne" when he scored against his old club Man City, he went back to his position without celebrating. They treated him well there and he didn't let them down, so fair play to him.

Thanx for a great reply buddy, Michael Owen gave 8yrs service to liverpool and even some of there own supporters were dissapointed with the reception he got. When he left liverpool in 2004 to join Real Madrid for £8 million, I supose a few fans felt let down because at the time Man Utd were riding high. But I feel this shouldn't of been the case, as he had scored no less than 160 goals in his time at liverpool and he never gave less than 100% for a club he loved so dearly.

I know theres always been a fierce rivalry between Man Utd and Liverpool, but the fact they booed him didn't seem to bother him one bit. Although deep down he must of been dissapointed in them having been there one time hero.

Don't think too many Liverpool supporters will ever forget what MO did for them over the years. Generally it's a bit of banter and fans looking to gain any advantage for their teams through whatever means. Sometimes it is ridiculous, but that's football. I remember a Mr Kenny Miller, leaving Rangers and joining Celtic, now he's back scoring for Rangers. That one really confused the patrons of the great game in Glasgow.

As far as Benitez offering Owen a chance to come back to play for Liverpool, I agree with the decision not to. MO pleaded with Gerard not to leave for Chelsea some years back and promptly left a week or so later when Real Madrid came calling. But beyond all that, I don't think he's good enough anymore. Players too like fans are fickle in sport, the difference being Mr Owen won't ever have to worry about the recession. Did he deserve to be booed today? - NO not really - Did I care? - No not really. Just my opinion...

Hey nice one, I myself didn't realise just how good a player MO was gonna be, until his pace took him past the last defender against Argentina and sent the ball beyond the keeper and into the back of the net.

i agree that michael owen should have been booed at anfield today, but have to add that the loudest boos should be reserved for when wayne rooney plays at goodison. they should know, in fact they must know, what to expect from merseyside football fans when it comes to being a turncoat - its all part of the game

How sad that someone should think that way. I'm guessing you are probably still of school age and of course are entitled to your opinion, but I would be ahamed of my kids if they had views like that. What ever happened to decency and values.

I must agree totally with wot you say jockney, I thought the pride of mersey side stood for better beliefs and how can a player be booed when he put 8yrs of his career into a team he loved. But as you rightly said every1 is entitled to an opinion.

Michael owen an every other player going back to play against a team they played for,an getting booed, abused ect ect is disgusting.in my view they should take it as a complement as only the best get this treatment.
many players have left the team i support,i wish them all the best an still like to see them do well.weather playing or managing a team against us.

Jockney mate, i have to disagree with you here....

We are just talking booing here right??????
I never actually saw/heard it, so i hope we are.

The fans, as paying (and by God it costs you) patrons have the right to vent there feelings at the games.
If fans feel the need to boo (for any reason) a player then im sure they are thick skinned enough to deal with it, if not the thickness of their wage packet should help console them.

Now if your talkin' about vile chants and songs that are below the belt, of course that's bang out of order and should be stamped out.
I just feel the whole pantomime of the fans singing and booing is all par for the course, and that's their chance to let loose.

As was said, fans are a fickle bunch.
If Michael owen happens to be in the world cup squad next year(after a miraculous season lol) and scores an important goal for you, these same fans will cheering like mad. I'm not saying he'd get the prodigal son treatment from all but they would be cheering him scoring for "engerland", with-out a doubt.

Anyway we have enough of the vile up here, i just feel the fans have the right to chant and boo without taking it too far.
A Mr Henrik Larsson came back to Celtic with Barca in the champions league, Got cheered on as a sub, ripped us apart and scored and still had a standing ovation at the end.
No fans have the same opinions, hence slick's thread.

So what your saying then caps..because of the expense, we have the right to boo..? Well the price of beer is pretty steep at my local, so i'll go in and boo him allnightThink he will ban me...?

No slick mate, you have the right to chant and boo as you see fit, regardless of the expense.
Thats what being a supporter is all about.
The supporters are the life blood of all clubs and always have been. It just seems political correctness gone mad if fans CAN'T boo or should be made to feel bad if they would/do.
Like i said i never heard it, so i hope we're still talking boo-ing and nothing serious.

I'm just sticking up for the fans before a snooker-like silence is imposed on the game incase anyone gets "offended".
We all know we can't be havin' that!

its the same with adebayor, boo'd, vile chants and insults. as soon as he scores and celebrates(stupidly i admit) he's the vilan. its his fault for the fans nearly causing a riot and knocking out a steward. madness.

dunne never did anythin wrong hence the friendly reception. even when he scored against us the only thing most city fans said is he never did that for us.

tevez, even after the length of time away from west ham scores and the fans respected thats because of what he did for the club. goes to united the week after and boo'd for no other reason than wearing a city shirt. all seemed to forge what effort he put into the game that made him(6 months before) a fan favorite. even having coins threw at him, madness.

did owen deserve to be boo'd......no. should the fans remember what he did for the club.......yes. should players(reguardless of the wage) have to put up with the abuse....hell no. its a job at the end of the day, if you moved/changed jobs would you expect(or understand) why former work mates boo'd and insulted your family?
