very true m8 he did not celebrate the goal and i think he has said was his worst day in football, but i cant see the utd fans seeing it that way, there dont seem to be many loyal players staying with a club long enough to get a testimonal these days and i think this is the problem, but booing has always been there and former players always seem to have there good day on a return to former clubs so if the boos can upset them then why not as i said owen is to good to allow this to happen to him and i think some of the boos might have been aimed at rapha for not resigning him

Michael Owen didn't deserve to be booed but it is understandable as to why many Liverpool supporters booed him. Owen did great things for Liverpool F.C. during his time there but his move to Utd shows how he didn't love Liverpool as many believe. Mr_Slick has mentioned about Owen "playing for the club he loved" for 8 years, Owen may have enjoyed his time at Liverpool but I don't think he loved the club. Owen's first priority has and will always be playing for England. Owen although very, very well liked and respected by the Liverpool fans during his time here never received the adulation of players such as Gerrard and Carragher because England was his priority unlike those two e.g. Carra retiring from Int. Football to focus on furthering his Liverpool career. The point being that although his departure wasn't acrimonious by any stretch, Liverpool fans wouldn't and didn't think twice about booing him should such a decision as making a move to Utd be made.

Also for those who seem to beso appauled by the boos, bit OTT don't you think? I didn't hear any derogatory chants in the direct of Owen, if so then it was very wrong but to me booing is acceptable, taking into account the rivalry between Liverpool and Utd, people are upset by what Owen has done but they don't hate him like Everton fans really, really hate Rooney because they have 8 great years to look back on when Owen was the driving force behind our team.

As was I, hence I didn't boo but Owen is professional enough to get on with it, he knows why he's getting booed. Liverpool fans booing Owen is much mroe understandable IMO than Fulham fans booing Bullard, due to the intense rivalry between Scousers and Mancs. As others have said, there's a lot more bad things which could have been said and done i.e. Spurs' chants towards Sol Campbell and the incident with Figo and the pig's head at the Nou Camp.

I don't totally disagree with you MR Jebb , but you accused me of being OTT, because I believe in respect and decent values. Whch was the point that I was responding to.

I do think your being OTT! Booing is a minimal reaction in comparison to those two examples, I can't imagine your reaction if and when such examples happen!

LOL , I think you need to count to 10 and then go back and re read this thread. You are accusing me of being over the top because I think it is wrong that a section of your supporters boo an ex player. Or has society really stooped to the level where this is now acceptable? Maybe I am just showing my age. But OTTT , sorry sunshine I dont think so.

Jeb mate, long time, no see.

You talked in your post about Owen being a professional, which I agree with, they are paid to do a job.

However, I'm not sure how moving to United shows he didn't love Liverpool. United are one of the premier clubs in the world and offered him a contract, do you really expect any professional footballer to turn that down in his position ?

I don't follow Liverpool or Owen that closely, but I think it is stretching logic to presume his move to United reflects on his love of Liverpool FC.

Maybe so, I don't agree with the booing of Owen, he did well during his 8 years at the club but as I said for some of our fans playing for Liverpool to then go to Utd is a mortal sin! Liverpool fans are usually very respectable towards past players and managers but when it comes down to Utd, it's a line that only the very brave cross!

To Liverpool fans, had he really loved Liverpool he wouldn't have accepted that offer. It may sound silly but it's just unacceptable to many Liverpool fans for a former Liverpool player to cross the divide. I, personally, think Owen used Liverpool as a platform for his England career and it worked very well. That's not a bad thing though and I'm not complaining! He scored goals galore for us but I do think his love for Liverpool can be brought into question!

You have made some very appreciative points my friend, but I cant agree in thinking michael only used Liverpool as a stepping stone to enhance his England Career. Furthermore he must of loved being treated like the hero he was at anfield, so therefore I suggest he did love Liverpool. If he is to be accused of using a team then may I suggest that has to be Man Utd. He knows its the best possible chance, of ever pulling on an England shirt ever again. Just my thoughts buddy. Steve.
