Default Super Bowl XLV --- Steelers / Packers

It is soon upon us --- one of the largest sporting events of the year, widely watched around the world.

The National Football League, Super Bowl XLV

The combatants, the last two standing...

The Pittsburgh Steelers, owner of the most Lombardi Trophies in the 45-year (soon to be, 45 years!) history of the Super Bowl

The Green Bay Packers, winner of the first Super Bowl, and their coach, Vince Lombardi, for whom the Super Bowl Trophy is named.

After voting, feel free to talk about what you'll be doing come Sunday --- will you be watching? With family/friends? At the bar? What kinds of food will be prepared? Special memories?

The vote is simple ----

1. Pittsburgh will win their 7th Super Bowl (only Dallas and San Francisco have won at least 5).

2. Green Bay will win their 4th Super Bowl

3. I really don't care!

4. I love the game, but I love the commercials even more!

So, have fun!

Oh.....

I dont care either way, the underdog if i had a choice. But I do have a few questions about the sport.I find it fascinating how BIG it is over there. But whats so super about this "bowl"? Are there other smaller bowls? Or is it just a marketing strategy? And what does bowl actually refer to? Is it the stadium or maybe a bowl they win? And the ultimate conundrum wrapped inside an enigma. Why call it football? I know you do kick it but isnt the main thrust of the game about movement and running with the ball in your hand? The thing that puzzles me is the insistence of Americans calling actual football "soccer" what the hell is soccer? did you guys make this word up? I seriously dont mean to be condescending but I am interested in things like this, IE the origins of events etc Any queestion about football I will try and answer for you!! PS good luck both teams!

Mr.Anderson, All super bowls are special...especially when ya favorite team goes all the way.
what does bowl actually refer to

It's called The Super Bowl to differentiate it from other Bowl games played in college, and from teh Pro Bowl. The word "bowl" is used due to how football stadia appear from the area - like soup bowls or "sugar" bowls. The "super" in Super Bowl is to make note of the fact that it is the epitome of all the bowls played in any given year.

Why call it football?

What most of the world calls simply "football" is technically "association football," from the name of its founding and governing body. When soccer and rugby split, the association game simply adopted "football" as its name, while rugby football focused on the first part of its name. That doesn't mean one game is football while the other isn't. They're still both football games with a shared origin.
What's more, since the soccer/rugby split, other football-related games have evolved to emphasize other parts of the body to propel the ball. In fact, of the world's six major football codes -- soccer, rugby league, rugby union, Australian rules football, American (gridiron) football, and Gaelic football -- soccer is the only one that prohibits use of the hands. And they all employ kicking strategies to a greater or lesser extent.
== ==

is it just a marketing strategy?

I seem to think so...this is when advertiser will air new commercials for their product...some stay on the air...and some ya will never see again...

It is estimated that 93.2 million people viewed last year's Super Bowl, Super Bowl XLI. So that tells ya "the super bowl" is the time to air new commercials with so many people watchin' and really to be honest...some ppl. watch the super bowl for the commercials only.. which some are a hoot and others are a bust...

Let's not forget 'bout half time....The Black Eyed Peas have been named the halftime musical act for the 2011 Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. I'm excited 'bout that as well....

I hope this information helps....But "We" love "our" football....I got most off google, just to let yall know....

Whoo-hoo...off from work Sunday night...and the party is at my house...of-course decorated in Black and Yellow....with loads of beer...hot-wings.... pizza...chips and dips....and of-course

PS...I'll be havin' tequila inmy favorite shot glass...

Gotta go for the packers. Carroll Dale is from my hometown, Wise Va and he was a Packer. School stadium is named after him. He was in the very 1st Super Bowl.

Packers veteran quarterback Bart Starr was the top-rated quarterback in the NFL for 1966, and won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award, completing 156 out of 251 (62.2 percent) passes for 2,257 yards, 14 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions. His top targets were wide receivers Boyd Dowler and Carroll Dale, who combined for 63 receptions for 1,336 yards.

Yeo, you da man!!!!!!

Where I am, the party starts at 1:30am with kickoff at 2:30am. But we'll be cheering hard for the Steelers!

Go Steelers!!!

And Arezzo, sweetheart... you surely want to cheer for the Steelers! For it was the Packers who buried your hometown Bears... what better result than seeing those "Vaunted Packers" demolished by the Steelers!
