Default Ace + rag??

I still can't believe how many people play A+rag, (A with 2/3/4/5/6/7/8) i fold unless suited, and even when suited, i'll only flat call if the blinds are still cheap. of course if youre short stacked or heads up its a different story.
ive talked about this with some friends last night, and their argument for A+rag was you might hit 2 pair, but if you look at it like that, you may as well play 7/2 and hope to hit 2 pair. i was playing outlaws main tourney today, was playing very tight, other player raised, i re-raised with AK, he called, flop was something like A 4 8 (or similar). i raised, he went all-in i called and beat his A6,
if he just folded a6 preflop, he'd have still been playing. why get involed with A6??? crazy if you ask me...

Simple answer- For beginners an ace looks nice, so they play it. If the hit an ace on the flop, they think they have an unbeatable hand now, so they go with it. Beginners don't think what other players have.

Yes.....and no.
I agree......and disagree.
I'm guilty.....and not guilty.
It varies so much depending on so many things.
But then maybe that's an area where my game is poor?

can you see my point, if you hit the ace on the flop, it is very hard to fold, why get involved in the first place, fold before the flop and forget about it.
of course there are many factors to consider, im just saying, in general, i fold pre-flop...

the player who i knocked out earlier, is not a beginner, hes won many medals, and tourneys on play and cash side.. and i know many other experienced players who'll play A+rag, i used to play A rag all the time, but learnt from my mistakes...

Experience means nothing, you can play all your lifetime and still not beat 1$ sngs. Nor do the medals or some tourney won at real money side show anything. A sample of 500-1000 played tournies at the real money side shows what the player can really do.

can see both sides of this argument as i see ace rag difrently at difrent times a 7 on a table with 6 or more players is a instent fold for me as even if you hit top pair on flop with the bad kicker youv still not got a hand to bet yet on a table of 4 or less players on the right kind of table it can be a rasing hand for me and playing the right person id even consider a all in heads up with ace 3

I do tend to play ACE-RAG=2345 never with the 6789 and only on small limit blinds. The reason for this is because Ive folded so many times and I would of hit the str8, hmm now Im wondering if Im giving my strategy away So jimmy my friend doe's this sort of play surprise you..? I think its an example of everyone plays there own style, I wouldn't change mine for no one, and at the same time I wouldn't expect anyone to change theres.

P.S. Someone did mention playing Ace-Rag in "Heads Up" which is a good ploy and is something I tend to do anyway. Steve.

i dont usealy play ace rags but it depends on if its suited and the position im in..
if im in early position its an instant fold i even fold AJ/A10 sumtimes but i see alot of ppl limp with it what ever position there in. but sum ppl like to call with ace rag because like u said they could hit 2 pair and if they do they are gonna take the other players stack if he has AK/AQ...
any ace heads up is a strong hand so yes raise all in if u want to lol

I agree with most of what has been said. I rarely play ace rag unless its shorthanded. But their are so many factors to take into consideration too. I also am not crazy about ace 10 or ace jack in certain situations at a full table but it very much depends on my opponent and the situation at hand. All and all most begining players over play a weak ace more times than not. I love discussing poker thanks to jimmy for starting this thread.
