Question Baffled??11?!?

Can anyone enlighten me to how the winnings are split from time to time? I've been playing poker online for about 11 months. Previous to playin i watched it on TV avidly. I gained a good understanding of the rules, the different strategies but most of all the winning hands etc. Ive played on other sites with no probs. but i've noticed in almost every game i play the pot manages to get split and what i constitute as the poorer hand receives x amount of chips as well as the clearly defined winning hand?? Why?
I had a perfect example of this only today. I had pocket 7's and my opponent had 10, J unsuited. the flop brought 3,4,6,6,6. That meant i had a full house 6's over 7's. but blow me down the pot was split between us 2???
Confused? I was stunned,

It was probably a case of them having bigger chip stack so once the hand had finished they got a percentage of the pot back

It's normal, if your all-in is 100 and your opponent goes for 250, there are two levels to find out who is winning: the 0 to 100 level, and the 100.01 to 250 level. Since your strength goes only up to 100, you are only entitled to fight up to 100. So you will get back 100 (your bet) + 100 (from your opponent) = 200 because you have the better hand on that range. What happens above is between the players who have bet higher than you, cos they had more 'strength' than you. In this case, your opponent would get back 250 - 100 (that goes to you) = 150.

There are situations when multiple players go all-in, creating several levels. You need to find all the levels by sorting the bets and find out who won at each level... a bit tricky to compute, but fair !!!

It's all about how much you both put in the pot.
