Why is it when i have a good stack of chips (way more than the other players) my game play tends to drop? When im low on chips - short stacked - im able to raise my game and recoup what ive lost. Also, when im even pecking with other players i find that im able to hold my own and make the right calls. Surely when one is way ahead of others with a good amount of chips they should be able to command the table, does anyone else find it difficult to do this when they are way ahead with chips? What do you do when you're in that situation? cheers, fut.

That is an excellent question. I can relate to that situation so much. I'd also love to hear other peoples thoughts.

This is because, when you have the majority of chips.. You begin to make calls that you normally wouldnt make.. Seeing flops with bad hole cards. Betting on maybe hands instead of good hands. You think to yourself that you can afford it. This, in turn, makes your overall gameplay drop a level. ![]() At least thats what I think.

Some people just thrive on the challenge. It is like a tennis player who plays his best against top competition, but doesn’t when he knows he is superior to his challenger. When a person has a lot of chips, they sometimes take chances that they would not if they were hurting for chips. All top pro’s know that you must have a “killer instinct’ to really succeed in poker. They know you have to really ‘feast’ when times are good because a losing streak may be just around the corner.

i tend to like being at least level with the chip leader on a table, so you can put them all in if you need to. im not talking about tourneys as i only play on the ring tables at the moment. if i find myself stacked a lot higher than everyone else i tend to click stand up and buy straight back in. the extra chips only become profit when you take them off the table after all. i think if you buy in for say, 25k and thats what other people have then you can gamble and compete with that 25k, when you've got up to 50 or 60k you tend to start thinking about protecting that profit and that can make you too cautious. today for example i was playing on a table where everyone had about 10k in front of them except for this one guy who had 60k+. he was bullying the table for a while, but then i watched him go fron 60k to 6k to zero in the space of about 5 hands. he didnt need all those extra chips to control the game and as i said, he ended up losing them all. what was the point?

Very good question..... I agree with Matador, people play differently depending on their chip stack. When people have more chips they tend to bully more and play more aggressively.

well with a big stack what you should do is pick on the little stacks. You should not try to play a lot of hands, but if possible semi-bluff, where your opponent with the little stack can not call without the nuts. In the long run you should fare well, as long as you only do it every 7 hands or so, and to different players.

Thx for the reply's all.. some good pointers too. Since i first posted this thread ive been watching how people deal with being stack leader with a large amount chips and most people tend to do as jonnyjjs13 suggested. Some others though have been more aggressive with there chips and have placed large bets before the flop to force people to fold. This worked for a few hands until called with an all-in bet. Another thing i noticed is that it also depends on which type of table it is, for example, the fast tables like the twisted mammoth, people are more likely to take a risk and match the bets. But in the the big torny situation people have tended to fold when faced against large bets from the chip leader. So i guess it all depends on the table your playing on and whom your up against as to what tatic to use when you're the chip leader. Poker is such a good thinking game dont you think ![]()

if you are big stacked you can simply see more hands and you would prolly even play a 7-2 offsuit

getting in quick and chipping up is always good but with extra chips sometimes you play hands you normaly wouldn't play because you have the chips to do it

I agree with johnny pick on the small stacks but you cant get hung up on the idea it will still be better to plat your game as the cards fall

| No you wouldn't. Not unless you were on a mission to lose all the chips you'd won.
