Default Poker Starting Hands

READ THIS ON THE INTERNET AND THOUGHT I'D SHARE WITH THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED.
ESPECIALLY IF YOUR NEW TO POKER

Poker Starting Hands

In Hold'em, there are 1326 possible combinations that are possible for you to get dealt. This may seem like a lot but when you consider the 52 cards in the pack and KH 7S being one initial hand, it is not really that many. If you listed every possible combination you would find that there are 1326 different possible hands that you could start with but we are not going to go down to that level!
Considering that you have all these combinations, when you consider that so many hands (2 card combinations) are the same- for instance KH 7S is the same as KD 7H, there are actually 169 different hands to start with which are unique. In Texas_Holdem.htm"]Hold'em[/URL] you will get your 2 starting cards which will be one of the 169 possible starting combinations and you will have to decide whether to call, raise or fold your cards. It is important to have a game plan in your head as to which cards you intend to play in certain situations.
We have set out the win rate of each hand when randomly played against any other hand. This guide is intended to give you an indication of how each hand compares in terms of strength against any other card combination.

I have posted this elsewhere but thought it might be useful on this thread. The following link gives a table with starting hand percentages for between 2 and 10 players.

Something doesn't seem quite right with those percentages.

How can 72 unsuited give a better chance of winning than 72 suited ?

These percentages are normally worked out using multiple hand simulators rather than statistical calculations which would be long and complicated.

If we just take two starting hands out of the deck then there are over 1.7 million possible boards and we'd have to work out which one was winning in every case to get a percentage score for those two starting hands against each other. To do this for all the possibilities of two starting hands would take forever (not to mention doing this for 3,4 players, etc).

It is easier to estimate the percentage by taking two starting hands and then dealing a random number of boards and seeing which one wins. This of course introduces an error but the more hands considered the lower the error.

For example, I once tried this by taking AA and 72o out of a deck and dealing boards. After 10 hands AA had won 7 (70%), after 20 it had won 17 (85%) and by 100 hands 87 (87%) which is close to the value predicted by most simulators (which use around 1 million hands).

As such, it is possible that since they are winning so few hands then during a simulation 72o may win more times than 72s. To improve this the simulation could be run more times but since most players would not consider playing either of these hands it hardly seems worth it.

The one that jummped out at me was AKs 68.6% and yet AKu 67.0% seemed to be a very small differential.

Nice thread Kev , interesting reading

Both the AK percentages seem a little high. Although it might be a coin flip situation I'd rather have QQ, JJ or TT than AK.

i almost agree with you, but if i was in a hand with more than maybe 1 other person id deffinately want AK over the pockets, in a hand with 2-3 the pockets would be my weapon of choice
