Default Question: Keeping to your game in big tourney

Right, I've amassed a fair few chips of recent and I feel I'm on my way to mastering ring and mini tourney tables.
I have a slight problem with the big tourneys, such that after about an hour or so I get a little bored and end up making a large bet or call that I wouldn't usually do.
Just now I pretty much knocked myself out after leading the board because I went all in with nothing in my hand, with 17 outs on the river.

How do you lot keep your concentration in a tourney? I feel if I calmed myself down a bit I might be in with a shout of finishing in the money.

Danzi has posted answers to this question. He states “Play tight.” You should not lose interest if your goal is to win. Study other player’s tendencies. Do not bet so high until you hit no matter how many outs you have.

I get only bored when the sytem is slow, half frozen. If it is really too much I might also play reckless (which rarely brings in any good)

One thing you can do is study every hand as if you were plaing it: try to imagine what people are betting with. When hands go to the ends and cards are shown try to analyse in retrospect the betting patterns preflop, postflop and on turn & river. This should keep you busy AND will give you lots of valuable information on other players.

Information that will make you play better when you are involved in hands.

I tend to have Solitare or Free Cell in another window to skip between when I get junk.

The Big Tournaments are quite a challenge! I force myself to only play "Position" Unless I have AA KK QQ AK suited or AQ suited. I throw small pairs...22...33....44...away out of position...It"s just what I do. It helps me get to the last 15 most of the time. I also get bored, but playing good music helps. Sometimes I message a friend on Yahoo, or make a phone call, but studying other peoples play is very important.

Meh did better this time, finished 22nd out of 122.
Went all in with AK suited, lost to pocket Q's.

In a big tourney situation. It is probably not wise to go all in with AK..
Unless you have already hit something on the flop.

It was a one on one situation, pocket queens vs my AK. I usually play quite tight so when I get a big hand I like to go for it.

It was a pre-flop all in by the way.

my advise to you would be to try and occupy yourself by studying the other players betting patterns, try and second guess what they will do, soon you will get a good idea as and when to play aggressive or fold. i know its hard but keep in mind what your goal is. also, open up the flash lobby and there you can keep an eye on all the other tables and player chip count.

Be patient? I tend to fold more often playing in tournament play especially.
You just have to wait for your time, pick your spots and initiate action- whether they be with good hands, or semi-bluffing on a good draw. But when the blinds start to grow steep, a player has to be aggressive to perhaps hope to secure the blinds, or win a big pot.

At the end of the day, it's luck init?..... Not necessarily. If u can keep an eye on the betting patterns on a table, u could be able to pick ur spots easier and with more success, perhaps.
