Default sb play

i was in a situation today sat in sb position... i was good with chips probably 2nd best and the bb was very low, but enough to double up and get back in the game due to the blinds.

so, you've just been dealt 10 6 off suit in sb with a healthy stack but you're sure the bb will push all..
its a torny game not sng..

1, do you fold and wait for a better time.
2, flat call hoping bb will check to see the flop
3, or, do you raise knowing if bb wins he's back in the game... but if you win you're in the money.

thx

fut.

I guess it depends on the blinds, how the people play, etc etc.
I would have probably folded though.
Again this really depends on the player. Either one of the options is fine by me, although I would never go for option 3..

If u were good on chips and only 1 away from the money then there is no urgency. I'd have probably just called to cover/protect the blind, and if he shoved all-in then folded.

What tourney was this, and how well did you do?

I didn't realize how much I wrote until it was too late. Don't bother reading it if you don't want, but basically I'd shove before flatting. But most are right in that you should fold.

Here's what I wrote originally:

Level 1 (what do I have) says fold 10 6
Level 2 (what does opponent have) no idea but odds say a hand better than 10 6
Level 3 (what does/will he think I have) depends on how you've played so far. If you've been loose at all, level 3 says fold. If you've been tight or solid, then it's justifiable.
Level 4 (what does he think I think he has) ok let's be honest we don't play people on this level.

Basically, in cash game NEVER. In tourney depends. It doesn't hurt to wait for a better spot though, like quackers said (and sandy spelled).

Unlike what Teebs said I would go with 3 any day over 2. You are giving him half a blind in hopes of flopping something worthwhile. With any given hand you're not even winning 44% of the time. You're banking on hitting a hand good enough AND hoping he hits one worse than yours but still good enough to pay you off. (noooot gonna happen) If you raise though, most of those average hands will not call.

(Be forewarned here's a little math. Skip this paragraph if you wish. You'd probably only get calls from 66+, A7+, and maybe K and another face card (only about 10% of hands though). And if that range calls you still have a 30% shot. So 90% you win a blind, 7% you double them up, 3% you eliminate them. For stacks over 20 BB not a good decision, but for short stacks yes.)

Long story short for those that skipped the math: Pushing is justifiable in a tournament situation but only barely. And if he has any idea you're capable of this he will take advantage.

wow I always write too much.
