Default Tels tells

hi all copied this statement about poker tells,do you think playing online we miss out on poker tells.
must admit i dont keep player notes on players, but rely on memory when playing at the tables of those im playing against for tells in betting patterns this is whats hard when new players are at the table and i need to watch them closley.

One of the key skills most good poker players have is the ability to read their opponents at the table. That is why you hear so much about “poker tells.” A “tell” is any physical reaction, kind of behavior, or habit that gives (or tells) the other players information about your hand. If you learn the most common tells, you can not only watch your own behavior to make sure your body language isn’t telling all your secrets, but also watch for the habits and tics in the poker players you’re at the table with. If you can accurately read your opponent’s tells, you’ll make the right decisions against them more often and win more money.

Everyone has their own unique tics and tells, and it’s great to watch individuals and pick up on their unique tells. Luckily, there are also a few involuntary and common tells that you can watch for even the first time you sit down with someone. As a general rule, remember that when a player acts strong, he’s probably weak, and when a player acts weak, he's probably got a really strong hand.

See im in disagreement about the whole "tell" argument. Experienced players know all about tells and will act accordingly based on the cards they get and more than likely "trick" you into what they want you to do (reverse psychology etc) Newbies will probably have "tells" but it takes a lot of time to recognise the pattern if indeed there is a patten to their tells. For example they might have the same tell for a bluff and being dealt aces.

a lot of players have tells to there betting patons ( i know i do ) i think the key is to watch your owne game and ditermin your tells that way you can FAKE your own tells when you can master this you can realy confuse your oponent
the same it tru in live game again i have a tell that i just dont seem able to shift so the only way i can distraced from this is to fake my own tell

Even online you get to know a players pattern so therefore there "tells" thats why its important to mix it up and not be predictable I know Ive made a killing by being weak on the money tables (and showing it) when joining then going for the kill.

On the internet one must rely on betting paterns, confidence in betting, and alot of times something as simple as the amount they raise preflop or their position will give away their hand (or atleast give u a range of hands to expect) But in live poker its often physical tells such as hands shaking, swallowing hard or any number of things. the physical tells for the most part are overrated although sometimes they can be very important. But im my opinion bettingpatterns, position, and any number of things are more important than physical tells even in live poker. I keep lots of notes especially on cash side where I dont see players as often. I also like to put a tab on players so I know to watch them in future until I have some idea to their style.

BETTING PATTERNS AND DWELL UP TIMES ARE ABOUT IT ON TINTERNET, I DO KEEP NOTES ON A LOT OF PLAYERS, MY MEMORY IS SUSPECT TO SAY THE LEAST. LIVE THOUGH, I BELIEVE THEY TAKE ON A WHOLE NEW IMPORTANCE.PHSYICAL TELLS CAN BE SUBTLE OR RIDICULOUSLY OBVIOUS. HOW DAFT IS THIS, I PLAY IN THE SAME CASINO AS A KID WHO ONLY PUTS HIS CARD CAP ON WHEN HE'S GONNA PLAYALSO A LOON WHO PRESSES HIS THUMB AND PINKIE INTO HIS TEMPLES, LIKE IT'S THE HARDEST DECISION OF HIS LIFE EVERY TIME HE HAS A WINNING HAND

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR INTERNET TELLS THOUGH, I WOULD DEFINATELY SAY BETTING PATTERNS, DWELL UP TIMES AND CHAT. BEYOND THAT, WHAT TIME IS IT WHERE TIDDYW1NK IS, IF IT'S AFTER 2 AM, CRACK ON IT'S A CHIP FEST

One thing with online play that a lot of strategy sites mention is the use of the preset buttons or auto boxes. You know, where you check to box to select the action you want to take prior to it becoming you move. They nearly all say that using these buttons is a sign of inexperience. I would agree that is sometimes true, but only sometimes. In fact I remember using them a lot when I first started playing. Then I stopped using them completely, mainly because I noticed I was sometimes missing out on hands/pots because of it.

For example if I was going to fold I would check the box to do so. Now if I was on the button doing this, sometimes everyone from UTG around to me would fold, then my hand would auto fold, leaving only the blinds live. Then SB would call and BB would check. Both miss and check out the hand and one of them wins with their high card, while I just auto folded a hand that hit a pair. In late position it would be faily easy to make a grab for the pot in these situations, and in my book a win is a win even if it is just the blinds. Maybe in other positions it might be OK to use the fold button, but on the button and/or the seat before it, can as we know, add value to your otherwise not so great starting hand. Obviously like any situation there are lots of determining factors, and it is also true that if I had called I may have missed and wasted my chips.

But back to the point of Tel's thread. How people use the auto buttons can sometimes give you a bit of a read on their range of starting hand and/or strategy. I've used this to my benefit on several occasions...........and I've also got it completely wrong on several occasions too lol

Maybe a little more telling is when the 'check' button is used. It's post flop and as quick as a flash several players check. More than likely they have ticked the auto check box. What can this mean, well the most obvious thing is that they missed on the flop. Again if in late position in this situation a reasonable size bet can frequently result in everyone folding, giving you the pot with your hand which also missed.

Now I do sometimes use the auto boxes, but mainly to try and give the wrong message to anyone who is looking out for these actions. But most of the time you can check or call just as fast as the auto box feature, so that it appears to others that you have used the auto box.

As with anything it's not precise but it is something to consider, and can sometimes give you just enough info to gain the edge and take the pot.

By the way, in case anyone watches to see what I do.............the one thing I try to do when it comes to these auto buttons is use them only sometimes and in as varied a way as I can..................don't want to give anyone a clue now do I !!! LOL

Nice thread Tel

love the internet...

i chuckle thinking about how people may be reading a 'tell' into the situation where there is a hesitation in someone's bet... postulating on whether or not that means a weak or strong hand, are they trying to steal or induce..etc...

ffs if it's me im probably just looking for my lighter

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT LITTLE WIRE........
