Lightbulb Things that every poker player should know.

OK this is a serious post so please leave the trivial stuff to the thousands of other posts out there.

I think it would be useful to compile a list of Poker based one-liners which people use for every game.

Things like:

If you have 14 outs and can see the turn and the river you are even money to win the hand.

The chances of drawing a flush card with the turn and river still to come is at best is about 1 in 3.

The chances of drawing a flush card on the river is about a 1 in 5.

The chances of making an open ended srt8 on the turn or the river is about 1 in 3.

The chances of making an open ended straight on the river is about 1 in 6

The chances of making a gutshot straight on the turn and the river is about 1 in 6.

The chances of making a gutshot straight on the river is 1 in 13.

The odds of winning with a pair of Jacks against a random set of hands is 1 in 3.

The odds of winning an unmatched pair against an overpair are about 2 to 1.

The odds of any 2 unmatched cards winning against pocket aces is between 15% and 25%

I'm sure there are loads more "rules of thumb" that people use. I thought it would be useful for people to have an easy to use list.

Please contribute and check the mathematical accuracy of any rules of thumb please. Also if anyone spots any howlers in mine then let me know. Maybe at the end we could put it somewhere on the site for easy reference.

Cheers

Mac

Probably because the odds are there. I rarely will call unless they are. If I do then I am making a mistake or I have underestimated my opponents hand. I try to check the pot odds before every call.

Anyway, the post is not about my game... I'm under no illusions, its immature and in need of lots of improvement, but I'm happy as i've only been playing for 4 months after 20 years of playing bridge.

The post is about whether you have any easy to remember bits of knowledge which people new to the site might find helpful.

Cheers

Mac

hheeeee preaching in underware lol why do you teach what you can't do yourself.

all rules change acording to the player you play i have call danzi all inn bluff with just a pair but i wach the behavior of the game and try to think as the player.

i play the player not the game this is a trategy game if you know the rules so does many.

if you do the rules you r just one of the fish in a pond and will lose many!!!

ps i do apresiate the post but this is my 2 cents on it!

love ya mac!!! heee hee

Thank you Feo I love you too my friend, you certainly make the game interesting and yes we all have stories where we called against the odds and won. (you more than most I suspect). The idea is to try to ensure that people understand that they are doing it or share some other snappy gems which might help people.

i am sorry but i must say this. if you are playing this game and you dont know that if you have 4 hearts that the chances of getting a flush depends on how many of that suit are left in the deck and make the odds from there then you shouldnt be playing or you should play and not expect to do so well. i mean if you have three aces and thers the river card left and you are not aware that therws only 1 more ace but a str fl or boat will beat you then you should play sumthing else or expect to not do so well. anyway what im trying to say is that if you need a reference to get the odds of what hand you could piossibly get or to decide if some else CAN have you beat if they have the right cards then you are not going to play this game so well. those who know the odds all of the time in whatever situation appears are the people who do better then the ones that dont do better. AND TRUST ME you can bet on what i said the odds are with you. AS THE HEADING OF THE THREAD SAYS everything that you SHOULD know

I'm joining the Mac support group here.

There's also a lot of people who are still learning, so for them this is a very usefull post. It's nice to take the effort to share what you think are good thumbrules that every player should make part of his natural thinking. Ofcourse you can take other descission during your game, but it's good to have this in mind. Don't we all chase a flush sometimes because the 'feeling' is there?

I have one to add you've teached me yourself, Mac ... when heads up & sitting on SB the chance of hitting on the flop is 1:3, so don't fold too much.

I am about to go abroad soon, last round of quick email and fora checks for a week. I have neither the time to verify Mac's math (but I do trust him) nor to contribute any original material.

These are not rules to follow blindly, that's so evident it didn't need mention. It is the base to keep in mind during play and evaluate one's move against, even if we what we end up choosing to do is remote from the odds. And an excellent reference for beginners.

100% support vote for Mac's initiative.

Michael, there are plenty of new players here.

It seems to me Mac is just trying to share some information to help others improve. We all started at some point with a limited knowledge of the game and there is always more to learn.

I always find threads like this interesting and often pick up little tips along the way.

I subscribed to this thread so in the future I can look at them as often as I want. Being new and am not using any "standard " play, I have found it for a lot of people to read me. But knowing the odds really do help.
