Smile What sort of notes to take about a player?

Hello, we could take notes about players and the way they play:

Ideas about what?

-type of player? (loose/tight , agressive/passive, etc)
-bluffs often?
-raise with ?
-folds easily on a raise?

another ideas?

(beginning with that)

A good place to start is taking notes on yourself...how often do you play/fold a certain hand and why?Analyze yourself, then expand and use this for others players. You know,if ya want to.
Personnally,i just go with my gut feeling.Works for me.
Unless i'm playing against Roo...then i use my "Git" feeling.As in he's a Git,so i'm gonna call!
LOL!!!
Big cheers.GL...

I try to take mental notes about players. I have played poker for a long time, seems easier to remember certain things about certain players, especially if you play with them more than a few times.Since I like to play on 100K and up, a lot of the same players play there. I must agree with Kingcard about analyzing yourself constantly. I'm trying to figure out what is making me play such BAD poker right now. I'm an easy target right now so enjoy!

Yeah, once you analyze yourself correctly you can look toward others.

- Loose or Tight is the first port of call.
- Their skill level is the next thing to judge. (If you're playing a bad player, analzying wont help regardless)
- Patterns

This helps, but mostly you can win tournaments just by playing the right hands at the right time.

Great advice, Kingcard. I do analyze my own play. Since I am a tight player, I have to make sure that I do not fall into a predictable pattern. I consciously make sure that I play some hands that a tight player would not normally play. I even bluff occasionally.

- 2 or 3 first hands. If he tight - he'll fold anything but blinds. And maybe but higher pairs.
- only experience and instincts can help with that. It's a major problem in poker. Making it one of the most iteresting games to play.
- raise for steal blinds, if b4 flop. Raise after turn or river to steal pot. Bluff or not - u decide ))
- sure. Sit tight - and some players will be out. Or All-in with any hand - that's fun and can bring u a good begin stack to sit tight later.

i only take notes of the hand showed by every player (only on the ring table).
that's is 4 me the indicator of his style of play.
i don't like to fix ppl in a category coz we all change our style during the game (but i know that if some1 shows 8 5 i'm sure he will do it again)..

Months ago i took notes only on myself just to know how i could improve my level, but i gave up coz i understood that i suck & i couldn't do better!!!

Thanks all for your responses
But the idea of observing myself seems interesting: I'll also try that and takes notes

Maybe this is where I go wrong. But I dont focus on the player really I go with my cards in hand and wots on the table.
Also I think its hard coz for ppl like me who rnt really wot I wud say is a gud poker player! but if the luck is on my side then I do well but if the cards r against me then............. well

Was reading something yesterday (something like):

Playing poker is playing against your opponents not against the cards

The more I play, the more I find this makes sense (too)

That's such a great quote, I've just finished reading a book by Phil Hellmuth and it made me realise the very same thing. If I am to improve any I have to get a better read on my opponents and start to pay attention to their game.

Great thread by the way

Yes find this interesting too

The book I related above is

Your Worst Poker Enemy - by Alan N. Schoonmaker

I'm just at the half of it

It focuses on the other side of poker, not on the strategy

Trying to improve is fascinating me (and there's a lot of work ! lol)
