Default Gamble to get an advantage

Having spent most of the evening watching the international in the early morning I felt like a game myself so I registered for the New York Times. With ten minutes to the end of registering there were only nine players in, with one minute to go thirteen, I thought, here goes, another tourney cancelled, but at the last minute two more registered, last minute stuff. The tourney began, we played for around fifteen minutes when another player at the table mentioned that with a quarter of an hour gone we now had thirty three playing. My question is, are these players gambling that the tourney may be cancelled to get an advantage at the beginning. Maybe not all of them but I'm sure of the eighteen who registered late many had gambled on the cancellation. Many of these players obviously are not too concerned if the tourney is cancelled occasionally just as long as they gain an advantage if it does go ahead. You can deny this till you run out of breath but to me it is the only reason for their action.

My point Reaps is that they can't gain an advantage if the tourney is cancelled through lack of numbers but they don't seem to care about that.

I agree with you Fred, i have the same idea, but stupid to take the risk that the tourny get cancelled.Strange to take that risk
I would rather play than take that risk, and only for a few points late register so childish.
And than the people who come just before the break and mostly the same grrrrrrrrrrrrrr and than reach the final, weldone wow,not really
Hope they fix it soon because its a lot off annoying

I dont know if the people who register in the last few minutes before registration ends do it hoping for any advantage or not. I suspect that isn't the case but maybe you are right Fred. I can see your point mate.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see much healthier entry numbers. The bigger the field the bigger the challenge, which is great as far as I'm concerned.

Missy's last point about late reg, which is a semi related topic, is something people have commented on in Missy's thread on that topic. I'm not saying I like it on the free tourneys (I do on the money ones lol) but if the tourney is structured that way I'll use it if I need to. If I register before the start knowing that others can register up to 1 hour in, then by default I've agreed to that condition. The same applies to anyone who chooses to enter. So bearing that in mind if I wanted to enter 59 minutes in, then all players in the game have to accept that it is OK. Just as I would have to if someone else entered 59 minutes in.

I would agree that doing that with the relatively small entry fields in the OP tourneys tends to devalue the 'paid' places. I would much prefer to play ones with 2 or 3 times as many players, which would give more 'value' to those places, especially the medal places.

Seems to me in the circumstances the minimum of 15 should be scrapped and late reg set at somewhere around 20 to 30 minutes. Maybe that might be the best compromise for a while?

I just feel sorry for the players who can only play the NY or Wombats which seem to be forever cancelled when the very late reg's, if they registered on time, would rescue these cancellations.
