Independence Day is supposed to make you happy that you live in a free society. You celebrate freedom and all that means. You also should remember that living free did not just happen, but paid for by the lives of many courageous and brave people.

This is a day to be proud of. many countries/people have not yet gained their freedom, and live in fear under appretion. we all have a lot to be proud of here in America, and all over the world!!. we all need to remember and help those who are still struggling to gain ther freedom, so thay can have a better life.

Very true. And we do that with fireworks for some reason. lolz We also got Veterans Day as well as Memorial Day.

Not just neccesarily independence, but alot of countries celebrate their "birthday"- there's Mexico's cinco de mayo, France's Bastille Day (already mentioned), Canada has Canada day (july 1), and I'm sure there are more.... It would seem to me to be common...Always wondered why the English don't have a "Magna Carta Day" lol...

there once was an ideal and a dream that found its expression in the declaration of independence. in no small measure that document owes much to the english revolutionary and philosopher thomas payne's fine work the universal rights of man. he died in a dungeon in france. abandoned by all those who he supported in their bid to overthrow tyranny. the united states of america has fallen short of the dream and ideals your forefathers fought so hard to achieve. freedom is a state of mind. to surrender your human rights through terror and the fear of terror is to accept slavery.

nonetheless enjoy your celebrations and rejoice in that dream. for one day it may truly come to fruition.
