Default Is poker a sport?

i was having this conversation last night with my brother and initially i sed, well yes it is a sport the are tournaments and competitons, there are also leagues and people play poker for a living. He was saying its a game, and for it to be a sport it must involve some sort of physical excerion. well anyway i have heard people on the site sp4eak of iit as a sport and wondered what everyone else thought??

Poker with free chips, without a possible real money winning - definitely a sport. And nice one )

for ANYTHING to be considered sport there must be competition involved by two serparate parties. so YES poker is considered to be SPORT. not A SPORT but SPORT. ALSO many things that are catagorized as SPORT are not sports at all. for instance HUNTING is catagorized as a SPORT but it does not meet the criteria to be CONSIDERED aSPORT because there is NO competition. I mean how can there be competition when you have a 30 odd 6 long range rifle with a scope and the poor animal has no weapon at all. AND all things that are considered sport have what is called SPORTSMANSHIP. and there is no sportsmanship in the ACT of killing an innocent animal. OK so are we all CLEAR now????????????

Me and Danzi were discussing this on a TBird's thread the other day only about chess but still the same principles. Poker isn't a sport it is a game, for something to be considered a sport it needs to involve athleticism, for something to be athletic it needs to have some sort of physical movement, as poker doesn't involve athleticism it isn't a sport, it is a game but the difference is it can be played as a competitve game as it is on this site. I think thats why many consider it to be a sport also the fact that it is shown on sports channels and things such as that but that backs up M.V's comment about being sport, but I would jus call it a game always ahave done always will do.

yes i agree jeb totally but since there is competition then it can be both i guess but i will say in actual reality and not in a social capacity poker is a game not a sport but if you catagorize anything that has competition then poker is a sport hahahahaah. it a catch 22 i guess hahahaha but me personally i would say poers a game. and if i can mention this as far as hunting is concerned i say its not a sport it is a necessity if you need to kill the animal because you need it for food. but we have super markets for that now and i say hunting is NOT a sport although everty hunter in the world will disagree because then they cannot justify why they kill the helpless animals

No poker is not a sport! Do you run? Do you literaly sweat?
The only way it would be is because sometimes it takes endurance.
I always laugh when this subject is brought up.

I would say that if chess is considered a sport then so is poker.
