I SEE WHAT YOU'RE SAYING TEL. THE RIVER HAS MUCH MORE INFLUENCE ON HERE THAN IN LIVE PLAY. GOOD PLAYERS, PRO'S AND THE LIKE, RARELY GET TO THE RIVER. THEY RESPECT EACH OTHERS RAISES BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY'RE ALL PLAYING THE GAME TO A HIGH STANDARD. UNFORTUNATELY IT DOESN'T SEEM TO MATTER HOW BIG YOU MAKE YOUR RAISES, THE GUTSHOT CHASERS WILL COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE AND IF THERE'S MORE THAN ONE OF 'EM, THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE YOU'LL BE RIVERED. IT'S FRUSTRATING I KNOW BUT I'VE LEARNED TO LIVE WITH IT AND ACCEPT IT AS JUST A BIT OF FUN. IF YOU TRY TO PLAY A SERIOUS GAME FOR FREE CHIPS YOUR HEAD MIGHT JUST EXPLODE, BEEN THERE DONE THAT.GET THE CHILL PILLS OUT AND WASH A HANDFUL OF 'EM DOWN WITH A LARGE SLUG OF WHISKEY, IT NEVER SEEMS TO MATTER AS MUCH AFTER THAT

Wow, just catching up on Forum and what a great thread, though what it is about

a) the evil river

b) Freedom of speech

c) The fairness or otherwise of the poker algorithm (and I see no real difference between any online site and real poker)

Lets bring back the 3 sentance rule (what happened to that guy !!)

Tidds - this is exactly right. You see many many more rivers online so of course they have more influence

I got to go with daddysean on this one, if something happens with "more frequency" from time to time I think that that is a sign of true randomness, it wouldn't be random if certain things didn't happen with greater and lesser frequency from time to time (ie: Hand deciding rivers, for that matter getting high pockets more or less often too)

So is the question the differing influence of the river card between playing real life and playing online? Well completely different i think. You cant really measure it though. As real life is more emotional and involves personality, psychology etc this will lessen the actual importance of all the card in my opinion.
For example in real life, if an agressive player goes all in after river against an impatient player who allows his frustration/excitment to get the better of them then whatever the river card is hasnt really influenced the caller!! the caller is prob thinking "right this punk is at it so im gonna call him cause theres no chance he has a flush(or whatever)" on the other hand if the caller was sitting at home, playing online, drinking a cup of tea, scrathing his cougnh cough, he might realise well actually there is a chance he has a flush so better to fold, thus meaning the river had more of an influence on him.
And if there is cash involved this influence probably multiplies a hundred fold. If this doesnt make sense to you i aplogise.
