| This topic may be in the wrong forum. If so, I apologise and ask the Mods to move it. That said, it is not so much about poker as the attitudes and opinions of players. I have not played much poker on the site so maybe I am missing some subtle nuances about the game, but I just do not understand the angst that the river generates amongst many players. As I see it the river is just one of 5 common cards and yes we all get beaten by the river at times but we also get beaten by the flop and the turn. If I get beaten by a lucky river, I look at in two ways; either the other player has had the 'guts' to stay in when all looked hopeless or I have not bet enough to convince the other player to fold. Obviously this attitude is different to many on the site but why the intense hatred of the river? Would love to hear opinions.

| a lot of the time i believe its people just unwilling to fold and not respecting the other players raise. there are times when players allow the chase and thats fine. when someone calls a all in with nothing but hope thats when it gets annoying.

I think the point you are missing is getting beat by the river card is different to getting a bad flop or turn. After the flop even if your opponent has hit you are still in the game, same with the turn... ...but if your leading with the best hand and then lose on the river that's it, the end, no comeback. It's natural to feel frustrated when this happens, but you just have to take a deep breath and move onto the next hand.

| I think the pain is when you have a very good hand and you make a big bet to try and stop the other player making their hand on the river. Then they call you with a hand like 89tq and a jack comes on the river. Like they risk everything on the slim chance of that one card coming and it does. But the river can work for you as well as against so it's not always bad. ![]()

| Thanks to everyone for the comments and opinions. I can see that a loss on the river to a hand previously inferior is upsetting to many people and that is reflected in the posts. I have to accept that my opinion is different to most and understand that others get frustrated by 'lucky' hands delivered by the river. I would hazard a guess that the lucky rivers would be far less prevalent in real money tournaments where players would be much more conservative in chasing 'hail mary' type hands. All my life I have played draw poker so Hold 'em is new to me and I am still coming to terms with it. Again thanks all for the comments.

| bluesfan, I am so sick of donk play with the river that I am taking a break from playing. I try to play by the book meaning the odds but the odds have beaten me down to many times of late. Why, even in one of the four regular tourneys a player would go all in, hoping to catch a suit to get a flush or that 8.6% chance of hitting that last card is beyond me. Not as much fun anymore. Don't get me wrong, this is what free poker has morphed into I believe. Not angry at anyone or myself. Just disappointed as maybe you are as it has changed a lot for me. Not the traditional 5 card I grew up with. I did watch one of the invites of late and it was fun watching as this play happened a few times that I could tell thinking that a bluff was on. 7 players had a great game of cards and chat as it lasted over an hour before I left the table.
