if you sit out for more than 4 hands you will be eliminated...so not a good idea......

dont be afraid to fold bad hands.......only play premium hands(see statagy pages and tips)there is loads of advice and tips there

play tight and if your not good at doing the odd bluff now and again don't bother....until you feel confident to pick the correct time to do it.......

good luck

honestly there really are no tourny tips that will give anyone some kind of an advantage or cause any1 that doesnt have any sort of tips a disadvantage. you just play your cards as you would in any game. BUT there is one thing that i do that has helped me to be able to stay in the tourny long enough to get a couple of tourny points when i had a small stack and was definitly going to lose out because of the blinds. when you are in the final 25 or 30 and you are small stacked take every single second that is allowed to you before you fold out of the hand before the flop cards are shown because the more time that you take the more other players on other tables and your own table may go all in an d lose or just be small stacked and bet and lose and this will make you stay in longer and maybe make the final 15 or better and get some points. i have played in over 190 tournys and in a lot of them i had onkly 6 or 7 hundred chips when most other had thousands and i took every second that i was alotted to fold or check or bet and after about 10 or more hands were done and i was still in several others lost out and that made me get in the final 15 and i got tourny points. this does work and it pisses people off but it is a valid poker STRATEGY and it works and ill bet that i have about 50 or 60 more tourny points now that i wouldnt have because i used the time to my advantage. but other then that there really are not tips. just play your game.

Don't get to the stage where the blinds eat your chip stack.

I regularly make that mistake - and end up finishing around 25th.

You can fold or sit out in a real life tourney to go to the bathroom, get food, or stuff like that. It's not indefinite just like its not here. Keep it though for bathroom breaks and whatnot.

it depends on what hands ya get, even if ya have high pocket pairs there not always good, so i say use ur 30 seconds and just wait for the right hand to go for

Let's be VERY clear so as not to confuse people, because this HAS been a source of confusion on this site. What Kevin is referring to above (highlighted) is where you "SIT OUT" (i.e., don't play your cards and the timer checks/folds and indicates you are "sitting out", or you choose the 'sit out' option). In other words, you aren't playing the game ---- you will still pay the blinds when it's your turn, so this is not a strategy to avoid the blinds ---- basically, as others have alluded, this likens the experience to real life, in that you can stand up from the table to use the bathroom, get drinks, etc. etc. (could be necessary, especially during long tournies).

Now, if you are PLAYING the game, and this goes to the original question that was posed (i.e., is it an "ok" strategy to play very conservatively and effectively fold your hands just to bide time), you CAN fold EVERY single hand in a game. You are not required to play any hand. Of course, if you play this strategy, you might well stick around the game for awhile, but I would doubt that you'd be around for top 15 (chips, points), but personally, I can't say for sure, as I've never tried this strategy ------ I suppose, and as others have alluded, if you did this for an entire tourney, being certain to use all the time allowed on your turn (ala, MichaelVitelli), you might just have a flipping chance of sneaking in ------ the blinds, though, as the tourney progresses, will eat you alive.

Another strategy that some will use, to the absolute chagrin of others on the table, is the all-in every hand. If you hit the first few and amass a significant chip count, it is possible to stick around for awhile ------ people will begin slowly grumbling but it will start to snowball, as what you'll be doing is causing everyone to fold, as you're buying the blinds ---- this will work for awhile, but folks are sitting back waiting for a solid starting hand (high pairs, etc.) to call.

Now, I would encourage someone who is just getting into playing the bigger tournies to play a smart, generally tighter game, if the goal is to progress through the tournies and have a shot at making the final table. One axiom to follow, and I've read it here from the forum, is to "bet the hand you have, not the hand you want". In other words, carefully evaluate how much you want to pay for those fishing trips on the flop, turn, and river. Clearly, there are going to be situations where you will want to "gamble" for the right card, but always evaluate whether or not it's worth it ----- pot odds, hand percentages, etc. all play into this equation.

Just my .02 on this topic.
