Tim, there are MANY threads written on this in the forum, including some very helpful hints about strategies for betting. Short answer: If I am holding a high hand (e.g., AA, AK, KK, AQ, QQ, AJ, JJ, maybe even 10s), in that descending order and based on table position, where I am in the game (early hands, late one-on-one, etc.), I am going to make you pay to see the flop. You are playing no-limit texas hold'em on this site. If I have a very strong hand and let you see the flop for nearly free (i.e., I decide to slow-play a strong hand), I am usually only hurting myself, because your 2/7 might become 2 pair on the flop. Again, MANY threads on this in the forum ---- a little bit of searching and you will have a wealth of information.

Good luck on the tables, bud.

Cheers!

EXCELLENT POST ------- I was in a good mood when I typed my response.... the fact of the matter is that I should have also put in my cynical response as well. MANY here crapped all over Danzi's recent post (though I hesitate to say, I imagine the MAJORITY of those who responded to the threads never even READ his post). Danzi hit the nail on the head ------ this IS a free site (speaking to the free side, not the money side) and unfortunately, even up on to the Mammoth tables, it has become a bit of BINGOpoker. Folks on the free side would be making a BIG mistake if they were using their results here as a guide to how successful they'd be on the real money side (where it's already been acknowledged by 'Lava that over 95% are LOSING money ----- except for Bazzy, "don't call me Baby").

/end rant

hmmm you want my opinion ???? are you sure ???? hahaha ok well you asked for it. It is my opinion that you only posted this thread cause you wanted to put as many of those smiley face thingys in one page that you could possibly get in. We allknow that people bet way too much b4 the flop and all members that hate when someone bets too much b4 the flop will all have the same opinion and you know that so why even ask. yo dude if you type smiley face thingys in your browser you can find websites that have millions of them . maybe you will do that and get lost there for ever and not put those stupid smiley face thingys in your posts because youll be at those sites forever and youll never come bcak here hahahahahahahahahahahahaaa. thats mu opinion

its basically called betting upon a probabilty (which is gambling and risk taking) ie: the probability that you will improve upon, and have a higher hand than those your betting against. If everyone just kept checking and calling, Oh how boring that would be.
Your original post was very vague.

here's something to think about. A,K. and 8,9. for example. Which one has more chance of improving upon? neither has, because every card is equal in value until the river, but the 8,9 has more chance of a straight. So, I often put more emphasis on a suited 8,9 than a offsuited AK. However, youd need to see the flop before any more advancement is made. Theres lots of statistacl stuff on this if you wish to see it. That may well help you to asnwer your question on Why Do They Do It ?

Oh . I forgot. a lot depends on the chip stacks around the table.
